Title: 'Minuteman' movement shrinks as 'Patriot' groups multiply

The number of "nativist extremist" groups in the United States, exemplified by the Minuteman groups born in Arizona, shrunk dramatically in 2011, the Southern Poverty Law Center says in its annual report.

Their decline coincided with an explosion in the number of anti-government "Patriot" groups, the report says.

The report describes the Patriot movement this way: "Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the 'New World Order,' engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist."

The number of Patriot groups in the country grew from 824 in 2010 to 1,274 in 2011, the SPLC said, calling that the highest number the group has counted since it began in the Clinton Administration. In Arizona, some of the groups listed by the law center as fitting the definition include: Arizona Citizens Militia in Douglas, Southeast Valley Tea Party Patriots in Santan Valley, and the Constitution Party, present in nine counties. (See the whole list here.)

The number of nativist extremist groups dropped by 42 percent from 319 in 2010 to 184 in 2011, the law center reported. The law center describes these groups as dedicated to confronting suspected illegal immigrants face-to-face, either through border-area detentions, demonstrations at day-labor centers or other activities.

They attributed the drop to a splintering of existing groups and the fact that state legislators have taken up the issue, reducing the apparent need for the ground-level activism. Another factor, said Heidi Beirich, head of the center's Intelligence Project, was the migration of some nativist-extremist leaders to the Patriot movement.

Not everyone accepts the Southern Poverty Law Center as the arbiter of who is an extremist. In 2010, for example, former Arizona Republic reporter Jerry Kammer wrote this detailed critique of the center's decision to label the Federation for American Immigration Reform a "hate group."

Glenn Spencer, founder of the American Patrol group in the Sierra Vista area, is still fighting accusations by the center that he is an anti-immigrant extremist.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

Patriot groups are not anti-government as this articles describes them. This country was founded by Patriots who are the lawful government and established the Articles of Confederation and the Amendments. People who do not stand for what this country was founded under are anti-government.

Finally, I met Glenn Spencer in July 0f 1998 when he, Ezola Foster, Barbara Coe, and Terry Anderson, and other supporters were still in L.A. trying to clean up the city of undocumented aliens. He got so fed up with the bs that he moved to Arizona and inspired the establishment of the Minutemen Project founded by Jim Gilchrist. I met Gilchrist on Jan 13, 2007 downtown L.A. when he was trying to help free Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos who were being detained on false charges by the U.S. Dept of Justice because they were impeding the Bush families drug deals.

The SPLC is maybe the most dangerous group in America. For real Americans.

the problem is that a lot of such type people do not get the big picture. gilchrist for example is an avid zionist, proven by his own website page on israel when he ran for congress. Yikes. Spencer reportedly kicked a radio host of his ranch when they brought up 911 being an inside job. apparently that notion offended spencer greatly. Terry anderson, before his death, barred ANY MENTION of the 'new world order garbage' on his radio show. he wanted to stick to 'real issues'. wow.

coe and gilchrist meanwhile became embroiled in a bitter lawsuit with allegations flying on both sides. it was a shame because they supposedly began on the same side.

i'd contend that many if not most of the so-called 'patriot' and 'tea party' groups are not even anti government at all. many of them, are to the large part, still statist dopes who love war, drug laws, worship police, etc.

I remember the lawsuit between Coe and Gilchrist. It had something to do with malfeasance and misappropriation of funds which Gilchrist claims that people he trusted the most were trying to screw him. I don't know what became of that lawsuit. What a shame.

I remember Terry Anderson as I called into his show every so often as I could. I miss that guy. I met him and Congressman Tom McClintock, along with L.A. radio talk-show host George Putnam and Ray Briem, and Mike Reagan who was doing a book signing there on his book Death of the West. We had our meetings usually at the La Canada Flintridge estate to discuss the issue of illegal immigration affecting California. I know that Spencer was getting a lot of hell even out in Arizona concerning his confrontation with the DOJ on the border patrol issues where our agents are getting shot at and killed all the while the DOJ turns a blind eye away.

ive been to the jeffers estate many times too. you were probably at the tancredo event there also? :-)

the funny thing is, jeffers hosted all these good republicans there, and i saw jeffers at the alex jones 911 conference in LA in 2006. I wonder what all these good republican candidates would say if asked why they held their events at the home of a 911 truther? :-)

tancredo and mcclintock both turned out to be establishment shills. i know because i supported them both and know a lot about them. terry anderson was a good guy. life is short. I once sat at a conference listening to dr stan outlining 9/11 and anderson was at our table, so i know damn well he knew all about 911 and the new world order. it was a shame to see him fold like that on the radio. but, to each his own.

When was the Tancredo event? If it was after March of 2009, I had already left the State. But Jeffers estate was a beautiful place to gather for the picnics and to discuss the immigration issues that plague this country. I've been watching Fox 11 news on the internet and remember hearing that that area got hit pretty hard with flooding and mudslides.

Jeffers at an Alex Jones 911 truther conference? Oh dear. :(

I also supported Tancredo when he was running as a candidate against Obama. I did not know he was shill. What a disapointment!

Tancredo event was around 2003. He supported things such as real id, patriot act, military comm. act, preemptive wars etc. which to me was a deal breaker. The 911 conference was a vey good one. christine was thrre too (although that was before i knew her)

I'm really disillusioned with the whole group thing. There always seems to be so much corruption in the groups, always driven by money.
