I posted a joke on the board earlier and I would like to know from anyone who will reply if they believe it to be offensive. While I personally didn't think it was out of line I got (I think) three comments from people who sounded as if they were offended by it. The thread is The Fire Chief Said....?. Is it offensive, yes or no?

When I read it, I got so mad I thought about grabbing my axe and going into the local forest and chopping down all the endangered trees there where the spotted owls live, and stomping on all the endangered flowers.

Then I was going to go to the city zoo and start setting all the animals free. So I could hunt them.

Finally I was going to blow up a tanker full of crude oil in the harbor so my neighbors would be able to empathize with me in knowing how angry an frustrated I felt about your joke.

But I don't know if that qualifies as "offended". Maybe you should be more specific??

LOL! So I can put you in the "may have been offended category but need more information to know for sure"?

Exactly. For example, you didn't say what color the house was.

On a serious note though, the ethnic differences between whites, blacks, asians hispanics, etc are real -- every ethnicity is different, of course. Otherwise we wouldn't have the term. Here in Ecuador, there's a much more profound difference between the indigenous (indian) population and the Latinos/whites. They are shorter and smaller, and as a rule are probably less intelligent, though whether that's due to genetics or because they generally grow up on farms and learn to grow crops and nothing else, I don't know. Raising an indian baby in an academic environment may well give you as smart a kid as any other.

I do respect them though. Ecuador really owes it's existence to the indigenous people because they are the ones feeding the country. They work hard and are not slackers, and their communities out in the country enforce their own code of ethics & laws sometimes. But here, I've come to appreciate the *real* differences between ethnicities that in my earlier years in the USA I didn't think existed.

Yeah, without them people would quickly learn that farming is hard work. Even if you have decent equipment to do it with it's not the easiest work in the world.
