WASHINGTON (AP) — Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder, assault and a string of other offenses in the massacre of Afghan villagers as they slept, a U.S. official said.

The charges signed against Bales include 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of aggravated assault as well as dereliction of duty and other violations of military law, the official said on condition of anonymity because the charges had not been announced.

The 38-year-old soldier and father of two who lives in Lake Tapps, Wash., will be charged with going on a shooting rampage in two villages near his Southern Afghanistan military post in the early hours of March 11, gunning down nine Afghan children and eight adults and burning some of the victims' bodies.

The charges are to be read to Bales on Friday. He is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and faces trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The killings were yet another blow to U.S-Afghan relations, following a series of missteps, including the accidental burning of Qurans, which prompted violent protests and revenge killings American troops in the war zone.

The brutal shooting rampage also prompted renewed debate in the United States about health care for the troops, who have experienced record suicide rates and high rates of post-traumatic stress and brain injuries during repeated deployments over a decade of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered a head injury and a foot injury.

Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, has portrayed his client as a patriot, loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times.

"I'm not putting the war on trial," Browne has said, "but the war is on trial." He added: "If I can help create a discussion about the war, that would be a great way for me to go out."

Army officials have said Bales was cleared for return to duty after his head injury.

Bales joined the Army in 2001 after a Florida investment business failed and after he had worked with a string of securities operations. Bales and a broker at one company were hit in 2003 with a $1.5 million arbitration ruling after an elderly couple charged that their holdings were decimated.

i agree. that would be a good thing...and so should the psychotropic drugs given wantonly to the troops be a topic of discussion.

Exactly.

However, we have a set of contradictory datums.

On one hand Bales says he recalls none of it and was wandering around when he turned himself in.

The Afghani's who have investigated the crime are convinced that there was more that one and the physical situation as in the distance he would have had to travel on foot between the two villages, which are several miles apart, while committing multiple murders and that he left the base not once, but twice and nobody recalls seeing him. I have stood that kind of duty - watching access - and no one gets by once without being challenged.

There is something here we do not know and are missing information.

Either he was on Psychotropics and snapped or he was set up and is a fall guy for a Black Op. Data insufficient to resolve it at this point.

Everybody jumping on this bandwagon of hay because it's PTSD-fashionable and cathartic or whatever to bash our troops should be concerned that unresisted horror-storytellers is about all it takes to ruin lives and this world. There is no known forensic evidence in this case except pictures that show no fire and smoke damage to the interior of a supposed War Crime scene. All that is being called "evidence" is whatever allegations are claimed and revamped by people who hate us being there. If Bales is a real person, at the very least his family could be bankrupted by maybe nothing more than false information. If it was any American but an occupying soldier facing the death penalty for possibly being drugged and taken outside, then framed with heinous crimes on the testimony alone of people who would like to see them dead, people in this country might be marching in the streets like he's a Political Prisoner. Their hair might even turn white with fright at the thought it could happen to them without any actual evidence, just stories told and retold. I suspect that being conditioned to accept no real evidence as "due process" (think NDAA in action) is a likely objective in this probable PsyOp by those with no alliance at all to our Republic.

Edited for punctuation.

And what leads you to doubt the occurrence of the slaughter? There seem to be plenty of witnesses and it has been investigated by both the Army and the Afghani government.

Something happened, and it appears a lot of innocent people, mostly children, died.

No, that something happened is pretty certain. What is uncertain is under what circumstances and by whom.

I didn't say that I doubted the occurrence of a slaughter, although it's possible that it didn't happen. In fact, I said in this thread, Truth, lies and Afghanistan, that they may have been killed by Afghans, for all we know, and the villagers intimidated into accusing our Military. I don't have to be convinced there was a slaughter or there wasn't to know that there is motivation to frame our Military and that the only so-called fact- finding "evidence" amounts to whatever Afghans want to claim next.

Just clarifying here that suspecting this is a probable PsyOp in-process, as a joint-effort with rogue elements of our Military or as an Afghan PsyOp against our Military, doesn't necessarily mean that people didn't die. However, people so much want to believe the worst about our Military without question that it's like a "cakewalk" to false-flag them, even if people may have died of some sickness but were made to appear as if slaughtered -- especially since our own Military apparently just goes along with it to get along and to promote the Military Medical Industrial Complex. Catholics are regularly slammed for ever wearing hair shirts and whipping themselves as a "policy". When our Military looks to be doing virtually the same thing for PR purposes or whatever, it's expected as the penitent thing to do even if not guilty as charged.
