Title: Philadelphia priest abuse trial set to begin. They were all set to attack the accusers, until they hit a snag...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Defense lawyers plan to attack the credibility of the troubled adult accusers when two Roman Catholic priests go on trial Monday in a landmark child sex abuse case involving the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

By Joseph Kaczmarek, AP

But that strategy took a hit Thursday when co-defendant Edward Avery entered a last-minute guilty plea, confirming one accuser's account of a brutal 1999 sexual assault inside a church sacristy. The victim was then a 10-year-old altar boy, Avery a 57-year-old priest.

Avery's plea leaves Monsignor William Lynn and the Rev. James Brennan on trial. Brennan, 48, is charged with raping a 14-year-old boy in 1996.

Lynn, 61, handled priest assignments for the archdiocese as secretary for the clergy from 1992 to 2004.

He is the first U.S. church official ever charged with endangering children. Prosecutors say he failed to oust Avery and Brennan from ministry despite prior child sex complaints. But he might not be the last.

Philadelphia prosecutors say Lynn helped carry out "an archdiocesan-wide policy … (that) was criminal in nature." And they've hinted they could charge others when the trial ends.

Civil lawyers believe the trial will help them refile priest abuse lawsuits that were thrown out in Pennsylvania because of legal time limits or persuade the state Legislature to open a window for filing child sex abuse claims.

"The evidence that has come out about the conspiracy and the cover-up and the level of officialdom involved in it is going to help us," said lawyer Jay Abramowitch, whose priest abuse lawsuit involving 18 accusers was thrown out by the state Supreme Court in 2005.

Both Brennan and Lynn have pleaded not guilty. Avery agreed to serve 2 1/2 to five years in prison for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and conspiracy to endanger a child's welfare. More importantly, he acknowledged that the archdiocese kept him in parish work despite knowing of the earlier complaint.

Lynn remains the focal point of the trial. He faces a long prison term if convicted.

He has argued that he prepared a list of 37 accused priests in 1994 and sent it up the chain to Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua — only to have Bevilacqua have it shredded. The cardinal died this year, but his videotaped deposition could be played at trial.

The trial will be closely followed by Catholics across the country, including some who say their lives were destroyed.

"It gives me hope that it's going to raise public awareness, and it's going to expose the church — what they knew, when they knew it," said Art Baselice Jr. of Mantua, N.J., a retired Philadelphia homicide detective.

His son, Arthur III, overdosed in 2006, after his lawsuit accusing a Philadelphia priest of abuse was thrown out.

Philadelphia prosecutors blasted Bevilacqua, Lynn and other church officials for hiding scores of complaints that streamed into the archdiocese over several decades. Prosecutors detailed their findings in a 2005 grand jury report but said they couldn't charge anyone because the statute of limitations had expired.

But last year, they filed a second grand jury report based on recent complaints filed within newly expanded time limits.

Avery's accuser said he was passed around by two priests and his Catholic schoolteacher at St. Jerome's Parish.

"When Mass was ended, Fr. (Edward) Avery took the fifth-grader into the sacristy, turned on the music, and ordered him to perform a 'striptease' for him. … When they were both naked, the priest had the boy sit on his lap and kissed his neck and back, while saying to him that God loved him," the report alleges, adding that the kissing was followed by oral sex and penetration.

Lynn could get up to 28 years in prison if convicted of two counts each of conspiracy and child endangerment.

Defense lawyers will argue that the accusers are out for money or hope to explain away their troubled lives. Both accusers have criminal records and a history of drug addiction.

The trial will pit priests against fellow priests and is sure to be painful for Catholics throughout the region.

The Rev. Chris Walsh started the Association of Philadelphia Priests last year so the 800 priests in the archdiocese can share support and information.

"The priests want the same thing as the laypeople," Walsh said Thursday. "We want to know what happened. And, if possible, why it happened.

"The gospel says the truth will set you free. Let's find out what the truth is."

Perhaps these were the "satanic infiltrators" catholics are always babbling about?

You have to find a way to blame the devil because you cannot accept the responsibility of what your church is all about and WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

So, blame the devil! lol. dumb fucks.

(contd) that its FAG SATANIST PEDERASTS is because its true. Since satan embodies pure evil, (despite your claim that it's mere rebeliion/independence). satanic is the best adjective of pure evil. The pervs themselves are responsible.

Catholics, for the most part, do NOT claim 'satanic infiltrators' for this. But, I do. Most others, from what ive seen, deny or claim the victim is making it up for money.Or they dont address it at all because it makes them uncomfortable. The reason i say

deny or claim the victim is making it up for money.

Tell me, on what do they base this allegation?

It's just as stupid as blaming some devil. It's all about denial of responsibility. Different people have different ways to deny it.

People need to quit denying it. They aren't fooling anyone but themselves. But most wont do this because they are in that organization themselves. This is why they are not just a part of the problem, they are the problem. They simply will not see the corruption in their own church. When it rears its ugly head, they find something outside to blame.

People such as william donahue, a self appointed spokesman for some group he made up, seems to constantly deny & defend these pervs.he is just AWFUL. i dont know why people claim that these victims made it up.That is not true & is bearing false witness.

why do many people get so defensive about this? i dont get defensive, i get disgusted that the pervs did it. we need to seriously rout them out.No fags should be allowed to be priests. But, many of them control the seminaries. Its indeed a conspiracy.

I never heard of him.

But that doesn't surprise me. Anyone can make up an official sounding group and be a spokesperson. The internet makes that so easy to do. He can sound like a group but is nothing but a 1 man show.

I think what's causing this is that xianity in general and catholicism in particular set impossible standards to live by. Deny people sex and marriage, and you will have problems. One way or another, those natural desires will come out, but they won't come out in a Good Way. But this does not absolve the pedos of their own responsibility. They chose that life, and they can leave that life. They committed the acts, they pay the price. Those that covered up for them deserve just as much, if not more, prison time. Or just fucking shoot them all. Yeah, I prefer that. I'd do it myself.

1 more thing. By using the term satanic,I am not trying to deflect responsibility of the perpetrators. They have free will & chose to commit their atrocity.I was an altar boy.If a perv did that to MY kid, I'm afraid i would just take them out.End game.

to be married years ago. However, thats not the problem. Not being married does NOT equate to raping kids.To break a vow of celibacy is another matter entirely, not related to pederasty.

Yep. Donahue is the guy who TV networks put on by default every time one of these stories happens. its almost as if they put this clown on to make Catholics look awful. He is truly dreadful, in my opinion. I wouldnt be against married priests, They used t

the best site on this topic is RCF.org. Stephen Brady fought these pervs for years & exposed their crimes. He was criticized by the church, & ostracized. Several good priests who helped Brady were found MURDERED..

I'll take your word for that.

Why are there 'good' priests (or anyone else) in a corrupt organization?

If I told you that I was in the Hells Angels, and we help little old ladies cross the street, and hold bake sales for the orphans, would you believe me?

There are good kind catholics out there. But they are not good and kind because they are catholic. One does not need a religion in order to be a nice person.

Good folks shouldnt leave an organization because of corruption. They should rout it out.To leave would be conceding defeat. The corruption doesnt DEFINE the church. It only tarnishes it.

The corruption doesnt DEFINE the church.

Yes it does.

When your own pope covered up for these crimes, and so did those beneath him, then it does define the church. The leaders are the ones that set the tone, and those underneath dance to their tune (or else).

And this has been going on for centuries. There is nothing recent about any of this. And I dont understand why otherwise good people put up with this shit.
