Around noon, it was up to 650M with the rubes buying more and more.

One stat-guy noted that your chance of winning an Oscar was better than winning this bonanza.

The official disclaimer was that the odds of winning was something like 1 in 800M.

Lotto's - self-imposed taxes on the weak minded.

Yeah, the odds are awful - it makes drawing to an inside straight look like a sound bet. However, it is worth the 1 or 2 bucks I spend on it just to dream about what I would do if lightning struck.

Yep.

I knew a guy who won the lotto here for a million when it first started, maybe 20 years ago. I don't remember his name anymore, but we always called him Bunky because he was so full of shit.

When he won, he quit his job and moved back to Maryland where he came from, I guess.

He was penniless & dead less than a year later in his 30s.

Several years ago, 11 of us put up $100 each on a big jackpot: each of us got $3 back on our bet. My last lotto...

On the other hand, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson has won 2 sizable pots here.

Go figger.

I don't even know how the lottery works here, I don't think I've ever played.

I think the state sold it off to a private company years ago for pennies on the dollar, as I recall. I know they sold off the 80/90 toll road and the MSA tobacco settlement for a pittance just to get fast-cash.

I saw the same thing happen in California. A young guy in San Diego won a 4 mil jackpot and took the 200,000 for twenty years payout. Four months later he was broke and in jail.

That's why I never spend more than about $2. Even that is frivolity, but the odds are even worse if you don't play. I know what I'd do - in addition to charitable giving there's a nice little 5,000 acre spread in Chile with two trout rivers and a lake that I wouldn't mind retiring to. I'd raise cattle, apples, and dreams.

At my age there would be no time to "enjoy" the loot.

Therefore the only solution would be to spread it around.

Currently I help three students with tuition and expenses, sure could expand that program.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”
