A Colorado man was sentenced to five years' probation after accidentally shooting a woman whose red mohawk he mistook for a fowl that had been harassing his cats.

Derrill Rockwell, 49, told police that he grabbed his .22-caliber rifle and set out from his home Oct. 5 to fire at the bird after spotting it at the top of a hill about 90 feet away, the Daily Sentinel reported Friday.

"His intent was to spook it away," Deputy District Attorney Jason Conley told District Judge Richard Gurley on Friday, according to the newspaper.

But after shooting at the bird, the man said he noticed it didn't fly away and he reported hearing a woman moaning in pain.

Rockwell soon discovered that he had shot a 23-year-old woman in the head, mistaking her red mohawk for the menacing bird.

Conley reportedly told the judge that the woman may have passed out from alcohol before being shot. Police officers also found a bag of suspected methamphetamine near where she was shot.

The woman survived the shooting, but has since moved from Colorado and could not be reached by the newspaper Friday.

Rockwell was sentenced to serve five years probation after pleading guilty to felony possession of a weapon by a prior offender, the newspaper reported.

"In 15 years in law enforcement, this was one of the more interesting cases I’ve worked," Grand Junction Police Department detective Sean Crocker told the judge, according to the newspaper.

Let's see here.

1) Crazy cat owner

2) Drunken, passed out meth addict sporting a mohawk

3) Red bird (cardinal?) harassing (multiple) cats

This story was just built for April Fools Day. Yet it appears to be legitimate.

I support RKBA even to the point of allowing felons to possess firearms, with the caveat that if someone cannot behave responsibly with a firearm, that person should be held in custody until he is deemed responsible.

Knowing your target and what is beyond it was one of the first firearm safety rules I learned.

This is an example of someone who needs to be locked up for a while.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

To me it all depends on the felony. Crimes against property? OK. Crimes against people? Nope.

I believe some felons can have their firearms rights reinstated. Too, I belueve black powder firearms are legal. However, I could be wrong about this.

But it also sounds like indefinite detention. Who would be the one to take responsibility for saying someone is responsible enough for release?

Both these people are idiots.

Men of fashion dare not, fearing that they would lose caste. Even clerks dare not, because they might be discharged. And so I thought I would do it myself... Robert Ingersoll

It's not that hard. You a citizen, or you are convicted and in prison, or you are executed, or you are released to be a citizen again.

This is why I gave up on my red mohawk years ago.

I would nominate Larry Pratt and a panel of members from his organization, the Gun Owners of America.

Forget the NRA, they're bought and paid for. Parole boards and other government agencies are not even worthy of consideration.

But I also support the concept of lex talionis, and hold that the death penalty should be administered far more often.
