I remember when any wayward student got physical, they received a smack on their head, the teacher grabbed a handful of hair and the "child" would be slammed down into their seat.

That rarely happened, we had better upbringing and the teacher was God.

I despised "rule book cops." To have any success in the field one needs a large dose of discretion, something that apparently isn't encouraged in today. If had authority in this matter, I'd fire the responding cop(s) and his superiors who found this conduct acceptable.

I suspect we're a couple of dinosaurs guys....

Instead they will probably receive a citation for valor.

This is a local issue and can easily be dealt with if the local population would organize and do something about it. Unfortunately, instead what you are likely to find is that the majority agree with the action - especially the senior citizen population.
