CULVER CITY (CBS) — Culver City police say they have recovered five stolen guitars belonging to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and have made an arrest in the case.

“If you take a look at these guitars, each and every one of them has been responsible for creating one of his greatest hits in the last 30 years so there’s a lot of emotional attachment to these guitars and we couldn’t be more pleased that we were able to get them back to Mr. Petty,” said Chief Don Pedersen of the Culver City Police Department at a news conference Tuesday.

On Thursday, four of the five guitars were stolen from his soundstage in Culver City. A day later, another one was reported missing.

But the investigation didn’t last long.

Police say they’ve recovered the guitars and arrested the alleged thief, identified as 51-year-old Daryl Washington. Police Recover Stolen Guitars Belonging To Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

He was arrested after authorities say one of Petty’s guitars sold at a Hollywood pawn shop was recognized, according to KNX 1070′s Claudia Peschiutta.

According to authorities, Washington works as a security guard at Culver Studios where Petty and The Heartbreakers had been rehearsing for their upcoming U.S. tour.

Petty issued the following statement through his publicist:

“I’m extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends.”

The band offered a no-questions-asked $7,500 reward for information leading to the return of the guitars.

Glad to hear that, since I've got tickets to TP very soon in Austin.

I still love the duet that Petty sang with Stevie Nix on her second "solo" album. (Although I'm still in love with Stevie - I'm a sucker for Altos. There is nothing sexier than a warm rich alto or contralto. I also worship the ground upon which Shirley Bassey (a.k.a. "Pussy Galore" for you Bond fans) walks.)

Hangin's too good for this creep.

Actually, Shirley Bassey is best known for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979, but she never appeared in the films.

Pussy Galore was played by Honor Blackman. (Goldfinger-1964)

I expect I'll be sitting in that same audience with CadetD in Austin and am happy to know Tom will have his guitars since I think his voice alone would shatter my eye-glasses. Do you know if he holds his nose or something when he sings ?

Sounds like it doesn't it.

Lucky you two :)

That song you posted, "I Won't Back Down", was playing loud at a bar downtown at the Calgary Stampede about 20 yrs ago.. I was pulling 4 people in a Rickshaw (meant for 2) up the road across the street from the bar. I was having a hard time as it was uphill past the bar and about a hundred people drinking on the outside balcony started chanting, "GO... GO... GO..." to the beat and I was breathing hard and sweating, but the crowd chanting and Tom Petty's new song inspired me. I was about 24 yrs old. I made it up the hill with all those people on the balcony cheering and my passengers drunk and laughing. They tipped me well. It's quite the memory. Good song.

Great story ! You must've been in pretty good shape. (And the people must have been of reasonable weight) - not like that fat fucks hangin out in bars these days !

What I really want to do is go to the Symphony. I haven't been to a good symphonic performance in toooooooo long. Maybe some Brahms or Beethoven? Haydn would be fine too - the first symphony I ever attended, at age 9, was a Haydn bill. I have been hooked on classical music ever since.

It's never too late. I learned Steel Guitar, Guitar, and Piano as a kid (not that I can claim to play them anymore, but it wouldn't take long) and then took up Classical Guitar as an adult. Playing is fun! The one I haven't tackled, but would love to, is Classical Organ - but I don't have room for a Pipe Organ nor the 25K to buy a decent electronic one.

".....I still love Shirley though."

Brutha, you got that right.

Her voice is world class, and, she still receives invitations to all upscale affairs with guest lists that include everyone from Queen Elizabeth to Queen Elton. And, I'm sure you know that she's a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire", hence the title, Dame Shirley Bassey.

From Obsequipedia:

"For services to entertainment", Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) on 31 December 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II.[54] She was invited to perform in 2002 at the Party at the Palace, a public celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. She was awarded France's top honour, the Legion d'Honneur, to signify her popularity and importance in the culture of France.

Here's two cuts of one my favorites - one studio and one live. She just seems to have a particular affinity for this song as you can see in the second how she just wraps herself around it. The best way to describe it is "liquid warmth".

It was interesting reading the comments on Jewtoob on how a lot of people seem compelled to compare whatever their favorite is to Shirley.

The one that really caught me was the comparison of Streisand and Dame Shirley, by a Streisand fan. It did get me to thinking though - and I prefer Shirley - but the why I came up with is that Streisand is technically stunning whereas Shirley reaches down into your soul. It's like the difference between Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix. Eddie is a technical virtuoso but he does not have Jimi's soul nor his ability to make a song live and reach deep.

Excellent presentation by a real pro. The live version with the orchestra is great.

Thanks. It is interesting. While technique and skill are important they are not art. It was something I read on the Philosophy of Art that set me off on this path. Art is communication of something with emotional impact - whether it be a painting, a song, or a sculpture - an artist is saying something and focusing on technique over message makes for well executed sterile art.
