Title: Starbucks to Phase Out Coloring From Crushed Beetles

(Reuters) Apr 20 - Starbucks said on its blog that it will stop using a natural, government-approved coloring made from crushed beetles in its strawberry flavoring by late June, bowing to pressure from some vegetarian customers.

Starbucks has been using the extract in its strawberry "frappuccinos" and smoothies, as well as some deserts like raspberry swirl cake.

"After a thorough, yet fastidious, evaluation, I am pleased to report that we are reformulating the affected products to assure the highest quality possible," Cliff Burrows, president of Starbucks U.S., wrote in a blog post.

Instead, the coffeehouse chain said it plans to use lycopene, a natural, tomato-based extract.

Burrows said Starbucks "fell short" of customer expectations. One blogger in March began an online petition to pressure Starbucks to stop the practice.

Ground-up cochineal beetles is a commonly-used Food and Drug Administration-approved food coloring.

Not only vegetarian customers. Kosher customers.

Caribou coffee chain is owned by the Saudis, and Starbucks was hoping to gather up the customer base least enthusiastic about supporting an Arab enterprise. But insects are a big no-no under kosher rules.

Believe me, it makes a difference. Back around 1930, Maxwell House went to enormous trouble and expense to demonstrate to rabbinic authorities that coffee "beans" were actually a kind of berry. Result: Coffee - starting with Maxwell House brand - could be kosher for Passover (beans not allowed during Passover). This year and maybe previous years, Chock Full O' Nuts coffee had lids that said in big big letters "No nuts in Chock Full O' Nuts" (the coffee brand got its start with a chain of peanut shops, but nuts also not allowed during Passover). Even Coca-Cola had its soda checked out by kosher authorities around 1920 - previously its recipe included beef tallow but that was taken out to enable it to get the kosher certification.

According to this website

Muslims are prohibitted from eating insects with the exception of locusts which are O.K because the prophet Muhammed and his troops ate them.

The third principle is that, amongst the land-animals, those that have no blood in them are considered Haram, such as a hornet, fly, spider, beetle, scorpion, ant, etc. Allah Most High says:

for he (the Prophet) commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure) (Surah al- Araf, V: 157)

Thus, animals that dont contain blood such as spiders and others are considered to be from what is impure because a sound natured person would detest their consumption.

The only exception is that of a locust, for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) clearly permitted its consumption, in the Hadith of Sunan Abu Dawud and Musnad Ahmad quoted earlier.

Similarly, Ibn Abi Awfa (Allah be pleased with him) was asked concerning the consuming of a locust and he said: I fought with the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) in six or seven battles, and we used to eat it (locust) with him. (Sunan Abu Dawud, no: 3806)

According to this website:

Locusts can be kosher but there is some controversy about which locusts.

The Mishna states in Chullin:

"Any kind of grasshopper that has four walking legs, four wings, two jumping legs and whose wings cover the greater part of its body is kosher." [edit]

Yes there are kosher locusts (not common grasshoppers) but I have no idea if the insect used for the coloring is that kind. Probably some kind of certification - "This StarBucks delicacy contains insect parts - but it's a kosher insect" - would have an overall negative effect on all customers. And, to many who keep kosher, the eating of anything "animal" prohibits anything dairy in the same meal, so the inclusion of even a kosher locust prevents the ingredient of cream, milk, ice cream, butter, etc., not only in the same drink but in anything else in the same meal. It's hard to be a Jew.

My late uncle, who spent a lot of time studying the issue, finally concluded that the Kosher rules evolved out of climate, the absence of refrigeration, and thus the rate at which certain foods go bad. For example Shellfish spoils very rapidly without refrigeration. So, to someone living in a desert, or near desert arid zone, climate zone very far from the ocean would have gotten food poisoning from "fresh seafood" that had to be shipped any distance. Some was no doubt evolved from other influences and prejudices but I do think my uncle had it pretty well pinned.
