Death of alleged murderer in Washington state highlights media bias against survivalism

A Washington state man suspected of murdering his wife and daughter had been on the run and was being hunted in his underground bunker by SWAT teams until his death was announced moments ago.

The FOX News article which recounts the details of 41-year-old Peter Keller and his hideout in the Cascade foothills pays almost equal attention to his being identified as a "survivalist," as it does the fact that he was a man wanted for a horrible double murder.

Unfortunately this type of coverage echoes a growing chorus of those in major media who are demonizing survivalism, and even prepping, in concert with statements from the Federal government.

FOX News dedicates a fair amount of space to the ideology behind this suspected murderer:

According to court documents, Keller had been preparing for 'the end of the world' and had stockpiled weapons and food in the woods. He was also described by people who knew him as a 'survivalist' with a 'distaste for authority.'
As if that alone serves as any reason whatsoever why he should have found himself surrounded by SWAT teams. The report also indicates some of the equipment that he had at his disposal; again, as an apparent implication of what might have led him to murder his wife and daughter:

Keller owned handguns, rifles, silencers and body armor, one of his colleagues at an IT firm told detectives.
Dating back to reports coming out of offices such as the Joint Terrorism Task Force during the Clinton administration, certain ideologies have been identified as potential threats to the rest of society.  Specifically mentioned are those who believe in the apocalypse and the End Times.  The natural extension to this, of course, is making preparations based on such a belief. (Source)

The popularity of the show Doomsday Preppers has offered a closer look into the "crazy" lifestyles of those who prepare for scenarios ranging from EMP attacks, the End Times, nuclear war, etc.  There is clearly a wink and a smirk peppered throughout the presentation of these individuals.

Meanwhile, governments the world over seem to be the group most preparing for an End Times scenario as they continue to stockpile ammunition, build underground bases and bunkers, and create fortified doomsday seed vaults.

It's an ongoing double-standard portrayed by corporate media that sees government preparation for disaster as completely sane and logical, while individuals who build bunkers fortified with food and weapons are implied to be dangerous survivalists who might just kill their family, as Peter Keller had been accused of before having explosives detonated on top of his hideout.

The new target for the media war (PsyOp) against liberty. If you believer in freedom, limited government, and being prepared for disaster then you are a kook who is going to "go off" and start killing people - you're a danger to Big Brother the community.(1 image)

Really? I've watched it a few times and saw no such thing. They let people tell their ideas and critique them at the end.

And there have been reasons to smirk. Like the idiot that tried to make a faraday cage out of a trash can, and to test it he shorted a 12v battery across said trash can. That was very smirk-worthy.

I don't know if there was a "bias" against survivalists. This guy supposedly was a honest-to-God survivalist, with the skills and the hidden supplies and hide- out etc. appropriate to a survivalist. And he was wanted for multiple murders.

I think that it was a matter of public safety to let people know that this guy could hide for weeks in the forest, and generally do all sorts of Green Beret stuff to remain at large for the long haul; he wasn't going to starve or freeze to death over the weekend.

And my point is simply that it is beginning to form part of a pattern.

Has someone not a survivalist ever committed a similar crime?

The answer of course is a resounding yes. So, how does his being a survivalist relate to his motivation for going nuts and killing his wife and daughter? The answer is that it really has no bearing. To say that he might be hidden out in a constructed retreat is newsworthy only to the extent that it is where he has hidden out. Similar killers have hidden out in houses. Does that mean that all people who own houses are at risk of going off and killing people?

My point is that taken with the upswing in articles and commentary which treat preparedness as some sort of personality disorder that there is at least a bias at play if not a covert propaganda campaign. Given that the media is under near total control I tend to suspect the latter.

I'd tend to agree.

At the surface the media acts as a psychological Border Collie to keep the sheeple flocked.
Oprah, Limbaugh, Jones, et al ....

On a more nefarious level they could be attempting to instill public consensus in support of an APA finding that individuals exhibiting independence or survivalist tendencies are in need of chemical treatment or confinement.

Oh, there is definitely a heavy element of that all designed by those lovely cheerful little Psychiatrists who work for the FeralGov - kind like that warm and cheerful Hannibal Lectre.

Once you know its there it begins popping out at you and the manipulations begin to become obvious. That of course is why they implant terms like "conspiracy theorist" so as to shut down rampant thinking for one's self. The weak minded and gullible have been trained to chant "conspiracy theorist" repetitiously whenever someone begins speaking unapproved thoughts and concepts. Unfortunately weak minded and gullible describes a sizable segment of the Amurkin' Sheople. I had become aware of it in general as far back as the mid 70's, and then when I caught Rush Slimeball using it in his broadcasts it made me aware of just how pervasive the manipulations were.

And don't laugh the APA is working on the latest revision of the DSM (DSM V) and it is rumored (and I have read a couple of articles by observers) to have some real juicy stuff in it as regards people who obstinately think for themselves and do not toe the Party Line. So, those of us who insist upon reaching conclusions based on the data wherever it leads, including unapproved thoughts, are in line for exactly what you mentioned - Soviet Style Psychiatry with confinement, drugs, and electroshock. You can see what they did to Jose Padilla (John Doe #2 from OKC) - they turned him into a fucking vegetable so that never again, even if he talks, will anyone believe him - assuming he can remember any of the key stuff anymore.
