Explains To CBS 2 How You, Too, Can Drastically Improve What You Remember

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — Most people are able to recall big moments in their lives, but a select few are able to recall minute details of almost every day.

Marilu Henner recently explained to CBS 2′s Katie McGee how her Highly Superior Auto-Biographical Memory, or H-SAM, has allowed her to hold onto even the most minor of moments.

“You say April 3, 1992 and all of a sudden the whole week starts presenting itself to me. That was a Friday and I was in New York, actually. Early that week I had won $1,760 at a winner-take-all Academy Awards pool. It was a clean sweep of the Oscars, ‘Silence Of The Lambs’, Jodie Foster,” Henner said.

At least a dozen people in the United States have been diagnosed with H-SAM.

“Every single thing that you have ever done is on your hard drive,” she explained.

Henner’s skill came naturally, but she told CBS 2 that there are ways that everybody can drastically improve their memory. By revisiting experiences and events in your life, you can train your brain, she said.

“Recalling memories is kind of like karaoke. You know the first one is hard, then you can’t get the microphone away from people. You start opening up those memories, and it’s just a floodgate opens,” said Henner.

Henner suggested to start by identifying what she calls a “dominant track.”

“Your track is something you remember exceptionally well. It’s probably something you love to talk about; people have a travel track, a sports track, and relationship track,” she said.

Once a track has been identified simple things like music, photographs, smells and tastes can be used to trigger memories of past events.

“Every once in a while take a mental snap shot. Where am I? Pay attention, close your eyes, and listen to what’s going on around you. At night, when you’re brushing your teeth, sort of mentally go through your day,” Henner instructed.

Henner also suggested adding what she calls “juice” to your day, because memory is tied to adrenaline.

“You can like, do the laundry, do the kitty litter, go to the dentist. Or, you could DO THE LAUNDRY! Take pride in it,” she said.

Henner said she believes that by improving your memory you can live a more conscious life.

To remember trivial details is not going to help anyone with anything.

To make an active attempt to remember those details is absolutely insane. Sorry, but this woman says she can do this naturally, but then she says you can train yourself to do this. How could she possibly know you can train yourself to remember daily trivia if it is natural with her? She couldn't, hence she is a liar!

Hmm must take one to know one.

Oh well ... It is not surprising that a fool sees no value in having a sharp memory.

I am not interested in what this over-the-hill second-rater thinks about anything.

“Arbitrary power is most easily established on the ruins of liberty abused to licentiousness.”

"And in the absence of thought or action by people of generally good faith, action by the more extreme and violent is assured."

My guess is that Henner's brain is so "wired" that she can use much greater portions of it than the rest of us for memory storage with retrieval also operating much more efficiently through synaptic connections anytime triggered by her thoughts or external stimuli. I think she would have done great in analysis and development of possible chemical reactions. Probably mathematics as well.

If she has such a great memory as she claims then why is she only an actress?

Why isn't she a doctor, lawyer, or engineer?

Actresses are not noted for their brains. If she has such a memory then why isn't she directing anything?

I am not going to buy that she has this great natural memory when she gets caught lying telling people how to "train" their brain to have a better memory of trivia!

If I want to remember something I remember it, and only it! I don't care about the trivia. Either her ability to remember trivia is natural or it isn't. By what she is saying here it appears it isn't all natural, or she is also lying about having such a great memory.

God is always good!

Superior autobiographical memory is not a “genius” trait and those in the study do not exhibit better cognition in other realms nor do they count Nobelists among their ranks—one is an actress (Marilu Henner) another is a radio reporter, to name just two. They are not even natural card counters. They perform no better than a control group on tests of short-term memory skills—rote memorization of a string of numbers, for instance.

It appears the ability to remember trivial events years ago only works if it is considered a long-term memory event. Their short-term memory is no better than an average person's short-term memory. This is why they have trouble making any money off of their "superior" memory. Alzheimer's patients also exhibit the same traits, they can remember details of things 30, or 40 years ago as clear as a bell, but then can't remember if they ate breakfast or not.

God is always good!
