the visegrips went missing in the chaos, but chaos is the basis of progress.

they made a pilot out of me... i enjoyed flying, was good at it,it was art, but it was seasonal, and i had better things to do in the off season than sweep out the hanger... writing and recording music, inventing stuff that should have been commercial but wasnt, writing nasty letters to the newspaper which resulted in a certain amount of local infamy, painting... the worst thing i've done in my life, so far, according to me, is hauling a few years worth of paintings to the dump when i had to move.

. now, because of my disregard for ... whatever, i'm in this old folks' home, subsidized, inspections keyed to your date of moving in. .

i had to buy the keyboard, i didnt want to, i had buyer's remorse before i bought it... but being obedient to whatever governs me, i bought the keyboard and it collected dust for months.

then i hit a flat spot in the guitar playing, so i started fooling with the keyboard...

well, it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be... a day, maybe two or three days to learn a bass line? ...no sweat... but i'm thinkiing it's probably like learning languages... the first few are slow, but after that, it gets quicker.

so, a couple days into the keyboard, with an inspection looming, i have to clean my room, and it's intolerable to do that kind of work without music... so i hooked up the little computer speakers so i could listen to myself as i gathered up the garbage.

maybe my voice doesnt sound quite like what i thought it sounded like... maybe nothing sounds like what i thought it sounds like, and i found the visegrips.

it's gonna be interesting to see if the inspectors react to these songs, because the songs will be playing as the inspectors inspect.

one of the first questions i asked, when i moved in, was, "how long to do think this is gonna last?"

anyhow, here's the same old american song, forty buck bag, with keyboard additions.

the way it works, is, the drums are the base, and they're qunatized, which means they're right on time, all the time... the drum noises come from the keyboard.

the pizza strings and the bass, though, are played by a human, and, given ny inexperience, there are mistimings and bad notes.

i'm 69 years old.

why do i give a fuck?

that url above, forty buck bag, is the latest effort at mixing properly... it sems to be a matter of eq.

you got to be able to play in the first place, but that's just a matter of practice.

if it's a good song, that might turn you on enough to fool around with the song... the problem is, every song i write is terrific to me, but it isnt so terrific to anyone else.

and there's not a chance in hell of commercial music success if you dont write meaningless songs... in the meantime, we've got this technology that gives a shit less about warners and sony.

the point is, if you dont have anybody you give a ahit about, you can say what you want to say without fearing retaliation against people you care about.

you got to pretend you dont care about anybody if you care about everbody.

vise-grips can be used for lots of stuff...

vice-grips are used to hold a joint so you can smoke it down until it burns your lips.

Oh yeah, joints. I use vice grips to hold small parts when I'm gluing wood or plastics or soldering shit together. When my generation was learning to make joints out of pot, I was learning to make joints out of hardwood. Ha ha.

the original version of that forty buck bag song was written when i was forty...

it was the title song of an album that i recorded when i was holed up for the winter between flying jobs.

i stayed with my folks for a couple weeks that winter, and would have to "go for a bike ride" to smoke dope... one of my favorite places was a thicket by the river, and i found some kind of paperwork there for food stamps, lost or discarded... the monthly allotment was $65.

a theory surfaced on another forum... it boils down to this...

we dont have to beat this shit to death because everybody knows what's going on... the people on these boards have some kind of axe to grind, and that's why they're here... the only thing there rest of us have to do is keep track of things, which can be accomplished effortlessly... we dont have to belabor the obvious...

that theory works for me, but it's contradictory to the common theme: americans are too fucking ignorant and stupid to figure out what's happening.

it all comes back to the starlings, doesnt it?

.

i got to say, though, that it all fits pretty good into the overall philosophy of jewishness... it's getting so fucked up that any jew with an appreciation of reality --including the reality of jewish philosophy-- has got to be quaking.

there's no substitute for good earphones... these cheap sonys (MDR-G45) are the most forgiving to my mixes, and they sound way best when listening to stuff from youtube or whatever.

the problem is, if you mix to them, your mix will probably sound bad when you listen on speakers or other earphones.

and that's what i learned from having to clean my room.

starlings

Strangest thing. Whenever I see a flight of bird take off like that, it grabs me down in the gut like something's sprung loose in there. It's like a chakra down there has come unglued. I want to leap up into the air myself.

maybe humans' big brains, coupled with human reproductive strategies, have given us the abiility to lie to ourselves.

meanwhile, that old old old ability remains, and we suppress it.
