Americans consume EIGHTY percent of the world's pain pills as prescription drug abuse epidemic explodes

By Michael Zennie

Americans consume 80 percent of the world's supply of painkillers -- more than 110 tons of pure, addictive opiates every year -- as the country's prescription drug abuse epidemic explodes.

That's enough drugs to give every single American 64 Percocets or Vicodin. And pain pill prescriptions continue to surge, up 600 percent in ten year, thanks to doctors who are more and more willing to hand out drugs to patients who are suffering.

As more people get their hands on these potentially-dangerous drugs, more are taking them to get high. Their drug abuse leads to 14,800 deaths a year -- more than from heroin and cocaine combined. Howard Levine

'Society of wusses': Howard Levin, a Long Island, New York, pharmacist, says doctors are too willing to hand out prescription painkillers

'We've become a society of wusses,' Long Island, New York, pharmacist Howard Levine told the BBC.

Mr Levine stopped carrying all of the major addictive prescription drugs after he was robbed twice by addicts looking to get high.

Man, 28, 'shakes girlfriend's 7-week-old daughter to death while high on prescription drugs' Man wanted for robbing SEVEN banks in less than a year...and he hasn't used a gun once

Nationwide, police are reporting increases in robberies and other crimes by people who are addicted to oxycodone and hydrocodone, the key ingredient in most prescription pain pills.

One of the people lured into crime by drug dependency was Rich Elassar, 36, who once owned a successful business in New Jersey. Howard Levine

Crime spree: Mr Levin stopped carrying several major painkillers after he was robbed twice by drug addicts looking to get high

But an addition to painkillers led to him taking 90 Percosets a day, he told BBC. When the money ran out he was desperate for more drugs.

One day, he walked into a bank and handed the teller a note demanding cash. He was caught and arrested shortly after the robbery.

When the police came to bust him, he said he was actually relieved.

'I looked in my rear-view mirror and I saw the cops, I saw their lights flashing and I really, really, really remember thinking, well this is it. I'm going to get clean now,' he said. Rich Elassar

Lost everything: Rich Elassar spent three years in prison after he robbed a bank to feed his Percocet habit

But three years in prison and a drug recovery program wasn't enough to help him kick the powerful hold oxycodone had over him. He has released three times since his release and must take medication every day to keep the drug withdrawal symptoms at bay.

He's been clean since June, but he's still doesn't know whether he's kicked his addiction for good.

'I think this is definitely it. I mean, I say think and I pray to God every day that this is it.'

Pro-drug war bilge. The US population is 300+ million people. We are one of the richest nations in the world with and advanced medical system (regardless of its flaws). Put the two together and you have this "statistic."

The idea that doctors are out there giving people drugs who don't need it is complete bullshit. The DEA monitors all of this like the good little jackboot drug warriors they are. Even a medium-sized town like Springfield, MO has a frigging DEA office for Christ's sake. These jackboots threaten doctors on a regular basis individually and as a group in order to scare them. If anything, there are groups out there who aren't getting the appropriate pain management regime and are suffering needlessly due to these fears.

I know many people an multiple scrips. One gal I knew had ten doctors prescribing to her to get her fix.

Yes, it's a rich nation.......with a lot of competition between doctors. They aren't losing patients for failure to write any scips. Yeah the DEA butts in, but that hasn't deterred the 600% increase in pain killer sells one iota.

Who is suffering needlessly? Are pills the only "appropriate pain management regime"?

No one said anything about doctors losing patients for failure to write scripts. As for the increase in pain killers, of course the use is going to increase as the baby boomer generation ages. Sorry, I don't buy the 600% number. That sounds like drug warrior bullshit to me.

There have been a multitude of articles over the years discussing doctors being afraid to treat patients with drugs due to fears of DEA retaliation. I never made the claim that pills are the only "appropriate pain management regime." That is a straw man argument.

There is very little competition between doctors anymore. Due to the cost of governmental regulations, medical malpractice insurance and equipment the overwhelming majority of doctors either work directly for a hospital or form groups and affiliate themselves with hospitals. Even those who are independent are affiliated with some hospital. Hospitals or groups within your HMO/PPO network get paid the same amount by the insurance company depending upon the procedure regardless of which doctor you see and the doctors get a salary. The doctors do not set the prices, the hospital or group does. If you go outside of your network to see a doctor affiliated with another hospital, it works the same. You may run into a little competition if you have a non-hospital affiliated doctor, but there aren't too many of those left and even then they can only control the costs of office visits and any tests or procedures they perform onsite.

Orthopedic doctors/spine specialists etc. can now how pharmacies on site at their practice. It used to be that there was a separation between doctor and pharmacy, now there is not. Along with this union, comes the increased profits for dispensing MORE meds to patients......but, I'm sure that NEVER gets abused.

Having the pharmacy on site opened the door for increased profits AND invited the DEA inside. Thus, the predictable outcome IS increased addiction and increased regulation. Yet, you want to make doctors out to be "victims" in this tidy little union. I don't buy it.

What a load of malarkey. My concentration has been on the patients not the doctors. You appear to believe that your hatred and mistrust of doctors gives you the right to dictate the medical treatment of others. It doesn't.

your hatred and mistrust of doctors

Project much? I do not hate or mistrust doctors.....I just don't think they are God or infallible. For crying out loud, I suggested OTHER OPTIONS to pain pills and gave you an example.....pull your panties out and take a breather, dear, you're going all personal and way too emotional over a simple suggestion.
