The European Environment Agency (EEA) has found strong evidence showing that many of the popular products contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which can cause significant harm to human and other species health by interfering with the body's hormone systems. A review of scientific studies literature commissioned by agency over the past 15 years suggested that five classes of hazardous chemicals are increasingly used in products like sunscreen and contraceptive pills. The main detected EDCs include phthalates, found in pesticides, bisphenol A and other polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) used to make plastics products like baby bottles, parabens, found increasingly in sunscreen, and the chemicals used in contraceptive pills. The scientific research gathered over the last few decades shows us that endocrine disruption is a real problem, with serious effects on wildlife, and possibly people, said EEA Executive Director Jacqueline McGlade. The EDCs may be a contributing factor behind the significant increases in cancers, diabetes and obesity, falling fertility and an increased number of neurological development problems in both humans and animals, she added. It would be prudent to take a precautionary approach to many of these chemicals until their effects are more fully understood. The experts further warned about possible multiplied hazardous effects caused by unwanted mixture of those chemicals in the environment and human body which may even produce new toxic substances. It's the cocktail effect, said McGlade, who asked for further investigations while noting that the effect was one of the most difficult to study. SJM/SJM Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
