A popular antibiotic used for treating bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and sexually transmitted diseases may boost the risk of death, a US study said Wednesday.

Azithromycin has been on the worldwide market since the 1980s, but the study in the New England Journal of Medicine is the first to document serious heart risks -- up to a 2.5-fold higher chance of cardiovascular fatalities -- in the first five days of treatment compared to another or no antibiotic.

The comparison was based on an examination of patient records in the southern US state of Tennessee from 1992 to 2006.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University compared about 348,000 prescriptions of azithromycin to millions of records from people who were not treated with any antibiotics or who received amoxicillin, a similar medication that is considered heart safe.

The analysis found there were 47 more deaths per million in those taking azithromycin compared to those on amoxicillin.

When researchers examined patients already at high risk for heart problems, the chance increased to 245 additional cardiovascular deaths per million in the azithromycin group compared to the amoxicillin takers.

While the relative number of fatalities was low, researchers said the findings offer new information about possible dangers that doctors and patients should consider.

"We believe this study adds important information on the risk profile for azithromycin," said lead author Wayne Ray, professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.

"For patients with elevated cardiovascular risk and infections for which there are alternative antibiotics, the cardiovascular effects of azithromycin may be an important clinical consideration."

The Croatian pharmaceutical company Pliva first patented azithromycin in 1981, and later struck a worldwide deal with Pfizer to sell the antibiotic worldwide. Pfizer branded the treatment Zithromax and Zmax.

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Side effects may include skin rashes, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing and rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeats, according to the American Hospital Formulary Service.

Before you start decrying antibiotics, remember that when used properly, they have saved many lives. The thing to take from the story is to watch for symptoms and act if they do occur. Not to stop using medicine. Prior to antibiotics, we had nothing to stop infection from killing without anything but prayer and luck.+6

steves Not true at all. Before penicillin there was and still is a natural antibiotic ( stops my colds, sore throat just to name two ailments) . Its final being used to cure HIV effectively. Besides HIV it kills over 600 pathogens. Its 100% natural, no side effects ( only one know and is extremely rare) and the viruses and germs cannot built an immunity to it. Be for penicillin it was the only cure for syphilis Big Pharma has repeatedly tried to get the FDA to ban it using falsified and fictitious studies ( I have read a couple myself ) performed by--you guessed it--Big Pharma because it is an element and cant be patented. You can make it yourself for pennies for a gallon. What is this stuff kept under the radar by Big Pharma? It was used by ancient societies for storing food in containers made of this element because it kills bacteria. It is the # one choice for fighting infections in all hospital burn units. Even the people in covered wagons driving across America used it in the water barrels to keep the water bacteria free. The winner is, Silver. It is available in colloidal form any health food store and the on the internet in colloidal form. But don't take one mans word for it look it up.

Morpheus11 • If there were NO deaths in the Amoxicillin/no-drug group, there would only have been a total of 15 deaths in the control group. To extrapolate these numbers to "47 more deaths per million" and "245 additional deaths per million" in patients with cardiovascular disease is just ridiculous. Erythromycin drugs have long been know to cause electrical abnormalities of the heart that can be dangerous when patient s are on certain other heart, fungus, or allergy drugs. This "news" is old and is just Grandstanding.+10

Mischief • I totally agree with Steve. Azithromycin is about as 'safe' as drugs get AND it works. The article doesn't say why the people died and if it was from a similar condition such as allergic reaction or cardiac rhythm disturbances. These 'scary' for the public articles do more harm than good. All drugs, OTC and Rx, have killed someone. It's just the way it is. Super 'safe'??? Tylenol/acetaminophen has killed many more people than azithromycin. Why? Liver damage. I respect medications and use them appropriately. I don't worry about the standard, occasional, blurb, saying "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger"+9
