According to Pingdom.com, there are more than 109 million blogs on the Internet. The blogging world has reshaped the way the Internet relays information. From cat photos to how to cover up cheating on your spouse, the blogosphere is one crazy world of information conjured up by the given writer and sent out to the masses.

Does this mean that all blogs are truthful? We hope than anyone who knows how to turn on their personal computer to read this knows that not everything you see on a blog is necessarily accurate.

But when it comes to blogging in North Carolina, apparently you must possess the proper doctoral certification to blog about health.

Like many bloggers out there, Steven Cooksey has had a pretty wild ride over the past few years. He recently wanted to document the comings and goings of his life through a blog on his website. The 51-year-old from Stanley, N.C. was hospitalized in 2009 after his blood sugar levels had spiked. He admits he was overweight at 240 pounds, in terrible physical shape, ate poorly and did not exercise. By all accounts, he was unhealthy.

He was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, a chronic condition caused by a problem in the way the body makes or uses insulin.

So after this life-changing news, he did two things that would make better of his situation. First, he began eating healthy, exercising, and learning everything he could about having the healthiest diet to normalize his blood sugar and save his life. Throughout the transformation, he lost 78 pounds down to his current weight of 163 pounds and is healthy and happy.

After such success from the mass amounts of knowledge he gained from his experience, he began writing about it and created a “Diabetes Support” life-coaching service. The service was to collaborate his experience with his passion to help others. He says he charged a “modest fee” for exactly “the same knowledge, opinion and advice” he had been providing for free in his personal mentorship of friends. He advised people on what to eat –specifically a big endorser of the Paleolithic diet of high-fat/low-carbohydrates– but also general help on how to live life healthier.

Cooksey clearly states throughout his site that he has never described himself as a doctor, dietitian or nutritionist. He even has a disclaimer informing readers he has no special dietary qualifications, just a wealth of knowledge and experience and a venue to voice it all to people.

It all sounds well and good, right? Well a North Carolina agency has tried to censor his online healthy food advice column, saying he was not a licensed dietitian.

From the CBS Local News in Charollette,

Cooksey filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal court, saying the state violated his free speech rights.

“When did it become illegal to tell people to eat meats and vegetables?” Cooksey said in an interview with The Associated Press. “How is it illegal to tell people not to eat grains? We’re talking about healthy eating. This is wrong.”

The North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition and several board members are named as defendants. The lawsuit was filed on Cooksey’s behalf by the Institute for Justice, a national civil liberties group.

The North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition said it was illegal for anyone without a government-issued dietitian's license to offer diet advice. Therefore after just one month of writing his Dear Abbey-style column on his OWN blog, he received a notice from the state asking him to stop “providing advice to readers, friends and family in private emails and conversations; and offering a paid life-coaching service.”

What is the only adage, “a friend in need is a friend indeed”? Is that not suitable for a friend who is in need of a healthier lifestyle? If a friend has been struggling with learning how to use the features on their new cell phone, must we immediately contact a certified cell phone technician? No...

Cooksey is having his free speech rights violated. Who is to take away your liberty to not only freely speak about life through your own website, but also hope to be a positive mentor and motivator for someone less driven, especially a friend? Has our government become the health Gestapo?

In this case, it truly seems like 'no good deed goes unpunished.'

Sound like dietitians ticked off at having to "disprove" Cooksey's advice when confronted with it by patients.

Steve Cooksey's story is an amazing one. His website www.diabetes-warrior.net is still active.

Steve's health situation was almost identical to my own, except his resting blood glucose was an astounding 720 mg/dl, where mine was only 240. He carefully researched & monitored the causes, as did I, and he came to the same conclusions I did, restoring his health to nominal with diet and lifestyle changes.

I wish I would've came across his website sooner, as it would have saved me several weeks of studying and trial & error testing. Steve has found the causes of the current obesity and diabetes epidemic in the country and the solution, which doesn't include BigMedCorp, BigAg and BigPharma.

Damn right they want to shut him down, but they haven't quite done it, yet.

Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.
