Rand Paul's signal to the GOP

Mitt Romney won a valuable seal of approval Thursday night when Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul endorsed him for president – even though Paul’s father, Ron Paul, has not formally withdrawn from the presidential race.

The younger Paul’s support could be a boon to Romney as he tries to rally one of the more elusive parts of the GOP coalition: the youthful, disaffected, libertarian-leaning activists who powered Ron Paul’s presidential run.

But the upside goes both ways on this one: while Paul is a helpful validator for Romney, endorsing Romney also gives Paul a level of mainstream credibility he lacked during his 2010 Senate campaign. It shows he’s willing to be a team player when it counts, and puts him on the safe side of any speculation over a third-party libertarian push.

And that could be crucially important or Paul if he decides to seek the White House himself in 2016 or beyond – as any number of operatives believe he hopes to do.

“Rand’s endorsement of GOP nominee Mitt Romney clearly shows that in spite of those who try to marginalize him, he has keen set of political instincts and is very much aware that a successful national run will require more than just his father’s loyal following,” said one Republican strategist close to Paul-world.

So if Romney wins, Paul will be in a position to act as a voice of accountability on the right without being accused of sour grapes, or of having worked to undermine Romney from the start.

And if Romney were to lose, Paul would be able to tell the party in 2016 that whatever insurgent instincts he may have, he got on board with an establishment nominee at a moment when it mattered.

Can't he just be executed for treason on national TV? Maybe Alex Jones could cover it.

Rand may be out front, but Ron made the deal with the devil.

Good ole Ron.

Good ole Ron.

Rand is just feathering his own nest for his own reasons.

No indication that Ron had any part in it. I do suspect the timing a bit. Rand came with the endorsement one day after Ron emailed the supporters to tell them he wouldn't break 500 delegates at the convention and that it was over.

If Rand wasn't waiting to make the endorsement, maybe Ron would have just run the clock out; it would be in keeping with his temperament and history.

I can't see Ron Paul supporters being swayed in the least by Rand's endorsement. Seems to me the vast majority support RP because they can think, and endorsements don't sway thinking people. But maybe that's just my bias.

endorsing Romney also gives Paul a level of mainstream credibility he lacked during his 2010 Senate campaign.

Ummm.... The credibility he lacked in the 2010 campaign..... referring to the campaign that he won? THAT campaign where he lacked credibility? The author here is certainly an establishment political writer.

Rand is a full blown neocon prick, and pop is an after thought, soon to be relegated to Ross Perot-like status.

Well, he smashed McConnell's handpicked toady, Trey Grayson (known to the Horde as Gray Treason).

Then he went on to beat the handsome articulate Dem A.G. of Kentucky like a rug.

But he was perceived as a lightweight in the Senate, someone with no real political resume and suspicion that he was Ron's son and would take up the same tactics. They really don't like that in the Senate.

Rand and Ron Johnson (WI) were the two real Tea senators, complete outsiders. You see the media talk about Marco Rubio as a Tea candidate but he certainly was no political outsider or neophyte. Same for Pat Toomey.

Ron is feathering Rands nest.

Blood decides, we have had two Bushes and will soon have another.

Ron is posturing Rand to be President.

Pinning the rap on Rand is self serving and ludicrous.

Rand can probably feather his own nest without any help. But he did wait for Ron to write his concession email to the Horde first. Polite, a loyal son.

Ron is posturing Rand to be President.

Of course. He wouldn't be the first ideologue who won his battle long after his death through his Super Sperm. Rand looks like him, talks like him, thinks like him. And the neocons will never wash all that out of him.

The Horde turning on Rand this way is very short-sighted. We should be concentrating on Ted Cruz in Texas and Liljenthat in Utah. And especially on Kurt Bills for Senate in MN. Kurt Bills is awesome, superb speaker, thinks fast on his feet, personable, beautiful family, handsome, a big athletic man with a big voice, lifelong union member, just the total package; he's a civics/economics high school teacher who is the perpetual commencement speaker at his school. And an Austrian Ron Paul Republican from head to foot. Frankly, he's a better Ron Paul than Ron Paul ever was. Maybe better at it than Rand is. You really should look up his vids and see what I mean. Man, is he easy to listen to. And Kurt Bills is the leader of the MN GOP (admittedly a tough job). But the RP folk in MN have taken over the broke and mismanaged state GOP with about 70% of the state officers being RP folk. So Minnesota offers us a chance to show what the Ron Paul Republicans can do and a better candidate than we could ever have hoped for. It could represent a complete breakthrough for the Liberty movement. Keep in mind, the political tide will always break in just one state first. Okay, now I'm so excited about Bills I have to post my favorite vid of him:

Perhaps you can see why I'm so impressed.

If we don't elect more Liberty candidates, we're done and it was a waste of time and money.

The Horde can be juvenile because we have so many young people (and we older Paul folk have spoiled them rotten letting them lead the movement, trying to develop the cadre). Many, not all, somehow think that all you have to do is just elect a president. Hooey. Who's going to be in their cabinet? Who is going to whip their legislation through Congress. They have a bad case of Beloved Leader syndrome.

If they don't get over it, they will have wasted their time and money (and ours) and achieved almost nothing. The Liberty movement cannot live and die with Ron Paul. This isn't the time to go LaRouche.

I expect we'll see the end of this anti-Rand snit before long.
