Medical Summaries What are the best pain pills? What are the dosages? Here is a comparison table summary of popular pain medication. The pain relievers below were ranked by effectiveness for chronic back pain, by a Harvard Study. Each pain medication was rated for effectiveness on a scale of from 1 (aspirin) to 10 (morphine). . 1. OVER - THE - COUNTER (OTC) Pain Medicine Anacin Minor aches, pains minor aches and pains aspirin allergy, Anacin non Headache fever, June 2009, again Vanquish Headache headache same as above Advil Aches, pains, fever, aspirin allergy, Aleve Joint and muscle pain arthritis, Naproxen heart risk Motrin 800 (listed above) (as above) (as above) Actron Anti-inflammatory, arthritis Notes : (NSAID= Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflamatory Drug) 90 170 - 700 60 40 90 90 . 2. PRESCRIPTION Pain Medicine Celebrex Osteoarthritis, Celebrex heart risk Ultram Moderate pain nausea, constipation, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, vomiting * Note: The scores for Celebrex and Ultram are estimates (3.7* and 3.8*). These two drugs did not exist at the time of the study. Demerol 50 mg The opiates and synthetic opiates (from 4 down to 10) are the most effective pain killers, but they are subject to the most abuse, and prescription pain killer addiction. All the opiates and derivatives are habit-forming. Lorcet 5-500 mg Vicodin 5-500 mg Lorcet Plus 7.5-650 mg Vicodin ES 7.5-750 mg Norco 5-325 mg Lortab 10-500 mg Vicodin HP 10-660 mg Percocet 2.5-325 mg Oxycodone is very effective. Percodan oxycodone HCl, 4.50 mg Oxycontin 40 RMS Morphine may be the fourth strongest pain relief medicine available. Duragesic ** The score for fentanyl is an estimate. It did not exist at the time of the study. Fentanyl is very effective for gunshot wounds, and fragmentation wounds. However, there have been serious problems with fentanyl dosing (overdosing). Death has resulted from simply handling the medication with the fingers. One must use great care when handling fentanyl. Dilaudid (tabs) I recently received a very thoughtful email from a Special Operations medic. He stated that he has extensively administered all of these top medications. He concludes that Dilaudid is several times more effective than morphine, and that it has fewer side effects, although just as serious. I have therefore moved Dilaudid to the "most-effective drug" position on the list. Not mentioned is one that has worked very well on me during my recovery from a Liver Transplant ---- Tramodol. Non-Narcotic. Non-Habit Forming.
I have chronic pain and my doctor prescribed Tramadol for me. Might as well have been taking sugar pills. And if you look at the chart again you will see that it IS listed (Ultram/Tramadol). One of my mother's doctors told her that he took it for kidney stones so apparently it works very well for him but he also said that there were people, about 30%, for whom it was useless. And apparently I am one of that 30%.
Ultram/Tramadol is a "political response" drug, intended to salve the nerves of politicians who can't stand the thought of people self medicating or becoming euphoric when they do. It's crap. The federal government caused the crime wave known as the drug war. At the end of the Civil War the number one ailment was known as The Soldier's Disease, which was addiction to Laudanum. It was available through the mail and soldiers who were traumatized and/or in pain simply doped their pain away. There was a lot of addiction but no crime because the dope was cheap and available. And politicians and celebs (like Rush Limbaugh) certainly don't have any trouble obtaining whatever happy meds they desire. They just don't want us to have unfettered access to them. Some wild eyed religious zealot came up with the notion that suffering opens the Pearly Gates for people, even if we don't share their beliefs. Sheriff Joe Arpaio magnanimously agreed that marijuana is OKAY for terminal cancer patients, but if your pain is severe and chronic but you're not dying then no reefer for you! So you see, the drug war is a great asshole detector. Cops think they should enrich themselves in drug forfeitures because they can, not because it strengthens us as a nation. And the fact that corruption is rampant among cops, judges, lawyers, border patrol agents, not to mention our kids, the ones who don't have their lives ruined by the aforementioned seizure freaks doesn't change their greedy point of view one bit.

Great post Dawg. The drug you mentioned, Laudanum, is the same thing as Dilaudid isn't it? I think people in chronic pain should have ready access to it. I could get by on Percocet (and be glad to get them) but I still think that the government should get out of the drug and hospital/patient, doctor/patient relationship. The FDA is one of the most useless agencies of the government and it needs to be shut down and boarded up like most of the rest of the government's tyrannical agencies.
