Earlier this month, Pentagon officials announced that 154 service members took their own lives in the first 155 days of 2012, a sharp increase from the same period a year before. “Veterans would not want to kill themselves if they were building schools and hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan, but that’s not what we’re doing,” Caputi told Press TV’s U.S. Desk on Sunday. “We’re hurting innocent people and veterans can’t live with the guilt, and that’s the whole root of this problem.” U.S. military and veteran leaders have acknowledged that the stress and pace of wartime operations have played a major role in a rise in suicide among military personnel. Panetta called military suicides “the most frustrating challenge that I have come across since becoming secretary of defense” and said leaders will redouble efforts to stop that rising trend.
