The Army’s pixelated camouflage uniform is getting scrapped — after costing $5 billion and making soldiers easier targets because the design stood out in nearly every environment they were worn in, according to a report in The Daily.

Researchers at the Natick Soldier Center in Natick, Mass. told The Daily that the gray-green uniform debuted in 2004 after Army brass interfered in the selection process, choosing looks and politics over science,

Researchers are now testing new patterns to replace the gray Universal Camouflage Pattern, known as UCP, and troops in the field have been given a greenish, blended replacement called MultiCam, according to The Daily.

“Essentially, the Army designed a universal uniform that universally failed in every environment,” an Army specialist who served two tours in Iraq, wearing UCP in Baghdad and the deserts outside Basra, told The Daily. “The only time I have ever seen it work well was in a gravel pit.”

“As a cavalry scout, it is my job to stay hidden. Wearing a uniform that stands out this badly makes it hard to do our job effectively,” he said. “If we can see our own guys across a distance because of it, then so can our enemy.”

Poster Comment:

Excerpts from thedaily.com article:

“It got into political hands before the soldiers ever got the uniforms,” said Cheryl Stewardson, a textile technologist at the Army research center in Natick, Mass., where most of the armed forces camouflage patterns are made.

The fact that the government spent $5 billion on a camouflage design that actually made its soldiers more visible — and then took eight years to correct the problem — has also left people in the camouflage industry incensed. The total cost comes from the Army itself and includes the price of developing the pattern and producing it for the entire service branch.

“They went to Home Depot, looked at paint swatches, and said, ‘We want that color,’ ” said Anabelle Dugas, a textile technologist at Natick who helped develop the pattern. That particular hue, she added, was part of a paint series then sold by Ralph Lauren.

Without enough desert-specific gear to go around, soldiers were going to war in three-color desert fatigues but strapping dark green vests and gear harness over their chests. At rifle distances, the problem posed by the dark gear over light clothing was as obvious as it was distressing.

Kristine Isherwood, a mechanical engineer on Natick’s camouflage team, said simply, “It shows where to shoot.”

The problem, the researchers said, was an oddly named branch of the Army in charge of equipping soldiers with gear — Program Executive Office Soldier — had suddenly ordered Natick’s camouflage team to pick a pattern long before trials were finished.

“They jumped the gun,” said James Fairneny, an electrical engineer on Natick’s camouflage team.

The brigadier general ultimately responsible for the decision, James Moran, who retired from the Army after leaving Program Executive Office Soldier, has not responded to messages seeking comment.

No comments at thedaily.com article. Recommend reading all of the comments at the Stars and Stripes site. Will post some of those next. These two are mine:

"What's the estimated financial cost to our troops, over and above their clothing allowance, for this latest design-disaster?"

"The Clinton admin decided to outfit our Army with the Ranger's black beret and contracted the work to China. In addition to issues of foreign manufacturing, that effectively made our troops look similar then to Iraq's. Under G. W. Bush, our troops were outfitted with inadequate body armor and helmets that were less protective from head injuries. In addition to the camouflage-problematic pixelated uniform design, it was decided at some point that they should also have problematic velcro instead of quieter, more secure buttons and sewing. Who got those contacts and why? It was also decided that their flag patches should be redesigned in a different direction and replaced. Through all of this profiteering nonsense, our Military vehicles were de-armored and left under- armored; but some make-shift kits could be purchased abroad to shield them somewhat better than the scraps and sandbags that our troops had to use to try and protect themselves. Who benefited from these supply decisions? Not our troops who've been maimed or lost their lives in consequence, not their loved ones, and not America in general either."

The Army has seldom had a good idea, fashion-wise.

Until about 1955 it was still including a watch pocket in its uniform trousers, at a cost to taxpayers of about a million a year. The soldier who suggested they omit the watch pocket became a minor celebrity (on the TV show, I've Got a Secret, they showed their appreciation by giving him a pocket watch).

Probably this unsatisfactory camo uniform will be used up as approved stateside furlough fatigues, to wear into town when on leave, until the supplies are used up.

From some random comments at the Stars and Stripes site:

"it's not only failed product, but also killed soldiers, but of course you can not prove anything..."

"Jimmy Carter had complaine that our soldier are less visible then taliban terrorists so we had to make a change to make our soldiers more visible as to make the fight equal. Does it sound im·prob·a·ble?" [My note: unsourced]

"Why didn't the reporter find out and publish the names of the "army brass" who placed "looks and politics above science" in selecting the uniforms? Name names! Hold them accountable!"

"They know exactly what they are doing, look at these companies in bed with the military and find out how many retired Generals and such work for them. Remember Dragon Skin body armor? These people should be arrested. They effectively stole 5 Billion dollars in a failing economy, lined their own pockets cause they have "buddies" in the military to buy said failed product, all the while using our money to do it. Not to mention the failed product. This is a widespread practice."

"Dragon skin is wildly overrated, moreso than interceptor (which has been beaten on the field by standard AP calibers way smaller than the suppoed "nothing short of 7.62x54" they've been peddling). Both are more hype than results."

"I remember when I was in the military and all the troops were complaining about the food on base....The sergeant told us we were exaggerating because they had hired a consulting company and paid millions to find the optimum mix of nutritious and flavorful food. As someone who returned to university later and got an advanced degree, I can say without hesitating, military officers are proof you can have a diploma and still be a moron."

"'ARMY INTELLEGENCE should be considered a contradiction in terms.' is a phrase that the people in the military use when talking about the people that you described. The ones that got a degree [in] fashion design in college that don't fit with military jobs and they make decisions about things they know nothing about, or they look at information that is 6 weeks old and tell you 'No one is over the hill and just walk over there and leave your weapons behind'. These are the people that said 'WMDs are in Iraq.'"

"why dont all the services wear the same battle dress uniforms"

"The purpose of having different, competing branches of the military is in case of a military coup. This way, whichever branch tries it, there are three other branches to defend the status quo. They must be in competition to do this, and - - they must have different uniforms."

"I am not up on current military pay levels, but just as an example, $5 billion is enough to pay the $50,000 annual salaries of 100,000 members of the military. I also wonder how the hell it can cost $5 billion to design, develop and manufacture clothing? This program needs a thorough audit."

"take into account the "total cost" of the Iraq War, especially the further U.S. treasure that will have to be expended to properly and deservedly take care of all the wounded warriors. Government bean-counters estimate the costs for this will run anywhere from $600~$900 billion. But following that old human nature axiom of "halving things when they sound bad" and "doubling things when they sound good"-----plus accounting for inflation and ever-rising medical costs -----we all know the real cost for taking care of them for the rest of their lives will actually run $1 trillion, $2 trillion or more."

All warmongering Neocons et al. Chickenhawks to the war fronts. They can trust their sort to better provide for their needs, can't they? All deployed troops and equipment leave before they get there. They know how to fend for themselves and their companies.

Reposting my question: "What's the estimated financial cost to our troops, over and above their clothing allowance, for this latest design-disaster?"

Care to make a guesstimate on that? Such profiteering by design at their expense and ours has been a frequent burden for many years. If you could give a ballpark figure since the Clinton administration, I'd appreciate it.

any new uniform should do away with the fabric fastener pockets and attachments that are on his ACUs.

Gen. Shinseki is lauded as a hero for stating the obvious that we needed more troops than was being planned for to go to war in Iraq. That was a PR show for him. He was not punished for saying so, as is commonly thought. He retired as a four star general and is currently serving as the 7th United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He was the main brass as Chief of Staff behind the beret maneuvering and contracting to China. He was also much involved with the moves to de-armor and under-armor our Military.

I think that they need cufflinks.

Clinton and G.W. Bush arrested and in handcuffs for dereliction of duty, along with their profiteering suppliers, would be more appropriate.

$5B CAMO SNAFU

Army ditches failed combat uniform that put a target on grunts’ backs for 8 years
By Erik German Sunday, June 24, 2012

Over the next year, America’s largest fighting force is swapping its camouflage pattern. The move is a quiet admission that the last uniform — a pixelated design that debuted in 2004 at a cost of $5 billion — was a colossal mistake.

Soldiers have roundly criticized the gray-green uniform for standing out almost everywhere it’s been worn. Industry insiders have called the financial mess surrounding the pattern a “fiasco.”

As Army researchers work furiously on a newer, better camouflage, it’s natural to ask what went wrong and how they’ll avoid the same missteps this time around. In a candid interview with The Daily, several of those researchers said Army brass interfered in the selection process during the last round, letting looks and politics get in the way of science.

“It got into political hands before the soldiers ever got the uniforms,” said Cheryl Stewardson, a textile technologist at the Army research center in Natick, Mass., where most of the armed forces camouflage patterns are made.

I wonder if the unis are also responsible for the suicide rates.

News article: "Pentagon statistics obtained by The Associated Press show that suicides have spiked this year to roughly one a day, higher than the rate of combat deaths. About half of those turning weapons on themselves have no history of deployment."

Might be some are called suicides but aren't -- as a financial accounting trick and such.

Thanks for the input. The "missteps" were intentional, imo -- and not just as an excuse to keep profiteering on eventual corrections, although that was probably a large part of the disaster plan. This is Mike Rivero's comment on the subject at whatreallyhappened.com:

"Remember in Nightmare Scenario my comment about WW1 seeming like it was designed to murder the most people? Yeah, this is what I meant."
