What price would you pay for freedom? In the exhilarating action epic FOR GREATER GLORY an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, as the film's adventure unfolds against the long-hidden, true story of the 1920s Cristero War the daring people¹s revolt that rocked 20th Century North America.

Poster Comment:

I saw this film yesterday and damn it was great. Right up my ally. Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Peter O'Toole.

What is interesting is that Catholic churches are promoting this movie which is in essence a very radical statement against the government when said government pushes too far. This at a time when the church in the U.S. has just released a letter on religious liberty (which comprises much more than freedom to worship- it comprises freedom of conscience.)

For those who liked braveheart, i highly recommend this film.

Here are some interesting excerpts from wikipedia page on the cristero war; such as the fact that the US military actually helped mexico kill the Catholic rebels and the klan funded the mexican govt too. the knights of columbus funded the 'terrorist' rebels (freedom fighters):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cristero_War
The Cristeros' battle cry was ¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! (Long live Christ the King! Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!). The rebels had scarce logistical supplies and relied heavily on the Feminine Brigades of St. Joan of Arc, raids on towns, trains and ranches in order to supply themselves with money, horses, ammunition and food. By contrast, later in the war the Calles government was supplied with arms and ammunition by the US government. In at least one battle, American pilots provided air support for the federal army against the Cristero rebels.[23] .... Knights of Columbus and the Ku Klux Klan Both American councils and mostly newly formed Mexican councils of the Knights of Columbus opposed the persecution by the Mexican state. To date, nine of those beatified or canonized were Knights. The American Knights collected more than a million dollars to assist exiles from Mexico, to continue the education of expelled seminarians, and to inform citizens of the U.S. about oppression.[73] They circulated five million leaflets educating the U.S. about the war, held hundreds of lectures and spread the news via radio.[73] In addition to fostering an informed public the order met with Calvin Coolidge to press for intervention in the oppression in Mexico. [74] In Mexico, according to Supreme Knight of Knights of Columbus Carl A. Anderson, two thirds of their Mexican Catholic councils were shut down by the Mexican government at the time. In response, the Knights of Columbus published posters and magazines placing the Cristero soldiers in positive light.[75] Investigative research in Mexican presidential documents has shown that private telegrams were sent by high-ranking members of the Ku Klux Klan in the mid-1920s to former Mexican President Plutarco Calles, who received much financial and political assistance in regulating the Catholic Church in Mexico, more specifically, a generous financial assistance of $10,000.00. The offer came when the Knights of Columbus secretly offered a group of Cristero rebels $1,000.00 of financial assistance for guns and ammunition. This was made after the fact that Calles also sent a private telegram to the Mexican Ambassador to France, Sr. Alberto José Pani Arteaga advising that the "...Catholic Church in Mexico is a political movement, and must be eliminated in order to proceed with a Socialist government free of religious hypnotism which fools the people... within one year without the sacraments, the people will forget the faith..."[76]

Some interesting endorsements. and as pointed out below, this is a movie that hollywood would definitely NOT make.

http://maxondeadline.com/for-greater-glory-endorsements/

Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop, Diocese of Phoenix “It is not often that a film opens a window into the past that casts so much light on the present. ‘For Greater Glory‘ depicts a courageous struggle for religious freedom that was inspired by love of Christ and love of country. The Cristeros of Mexico have much to teach us today.”

His Eminence Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, Archbishop, Archdiocese of Boston “As a nation established on the principal of freedom for all people, For Greater Glory reminds us of the important values that we as Americans and Catholics share and must be willing to protect. This film helps us to understand the history surrounding the Cristero War and its importance in the Mexican Catholics’ efforts to fight for religious freedom and tolerance. Those values are as relevant today as they were almost one hundred years ago.”

Most Rev. Bishop Kevin Vann, Diocese of Fort Worth “I was deeply impressed and moved by this movie, and I believe that its release is quite timely given our own recent growing concerns and struggles for religious liberty in our own country. I encourage all of you to take some time to see this great movie and to reflect upon the gift of our faith and our religious liberty that we have been given in this great country of ours.”

Rev. Edward M. Dougherty, M.M., Superior General of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers “For Greater Glory is an inspirational film about the power and resilience of the Mexican people during the Cristeros War. See this film and learn this powerful story and its broader implications for humanity. A stunning piece of filmmaking; the images will stay with viewers as they experience a profound appreciation for an often overlooked period in our world history.”

Andy Garcia on the Movie About Freedom Hollywood Would Not Make

Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria in For Greater Glory

(CNSNews.com) - Andy Garcia’s new movie—co-starring Peter O’Toole and Eva Longoria—is an epic story of freedom that Hollywood would not make.

“It’s a completely independent film,” Garcia told CNSNews.com. “It is being distributed independently and it’s being financed independently.”

And it is the true story of men and women—and children--who lived 90 years ago in Mexico and whose struggle for liberty could echo powerfully in the United States today.

The movie is about the Cristeros, a group of reluctant and unlikely rebels who rose up against the government of Mexican President Plutarco Calles after he outlawed the free exercise of religion for Mexican Catholics.

one thing i found very interesting is that i have never even heard of the Cristero war. ever. and that is with 12 yrs catholic school. and also, no Mexican that ive ever asked has even heard of it.!! Andy Garcia in an interview with nannity mentioned that very same point- that no one he'd asked, even mexicans, had even heard of it. he said it is a secret of history 'swept under the rug'. wonder why??

the wiki page i linked to is very interesting.

who had known that the US government had EVER helped mexico militarily? ever? much less within the last 80 years?

against Catholic anti gov rebels no less. WOW.

90,000 people were killed by the end of it. 60k were government feds, 30k were the rebels. so they did pretty good statistically wise. the women supplied the ammo, food and nurses to the rebels clandestinely.

im not into hollywood or movies so i had actually just heard about this from my neice a week ago.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”
