Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority, reverent of individual liberty” deemed domestic threat

A new study funded by the Department of Homeland Security characterizes Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority,” and “reverent of individual liberty” as “extreme right-wing” terrorists.

Entitled Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States, 1970-2008 (PDF), the study was produced by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland. The organization was launched with the aid of DHS funding to the tune of $12 million dollars. While largely omitting Islamic terrorism - the report fails completely to mention the 1993 World Trade Center bombing – the study focuses on Americans who hold beliefs shared by the vast majority of conservatives and libertarians and puts them in the context of radical extremism. The report takes its definitions from a 2011 study entitled Profiles of Perpetrators of Terrorism, produced by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, in which the following characteristics are used to identify terrorists. - Americans who believe their “way of life” is under attack; - Americans who are “fiercely nationalistic (as opposed to universal and international in orientation)”; - People who consider themselves “anti-global” (presumably those who are wary of the loss of American sovereignty); - Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority”; - Americans who are “reverent of individual liberty”; - People who “believe in conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty.” A D V E R T I S E M E N T

The report also lists people opposed to abortion and “groups that seek to smite the purported enemies of God and other evildoers” as terrorists. As we have exhaustively documented on numerous occasions, federal authorities and particularly the Department of Homeland Security have been involved in producing a deluge of literature which portrays liberty lovers and small government advocates as terrorists. The most flagrant example was the infamous 2009 MIAC report, published by the Missouri Information Analysis Center and first revealed by Infowars, which framed Ron Paul supporters, libertarians, people who display bumper stickers, people who own gold, or even people who fly a U.S. flag, as potential terrorists. The rush to denounce legitimate political beliefs as thought crimes, or even mundane behaviors, by insinuating they are shared by terrorists, has accelerated in recent months. Under the FBI’s Communities Against Terrorism program, the bulk purchase of food is labeled as a potential indication of terrorist activity, as is using cash to pay for a cup of coffee, and showing an interest in web privacy when using the Internet in a public place. As we have documented on numerous occasions, the federal government routinely characterizes mundane behavior as extremist activity or a potential indicator of terrorist intent. As part of its ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign, the Department of Homeland Security educates the public that generic activities performed by millions of people every day, including using a video camera, talking to police officers, wearing hoodies, driving vans, writing on a piece of paper, and using a cell phone recording application,” are all potential signs of terrorist activity. The DHS stoked controversy last year when it released a series of videos to promote the See Something, Say Something campaign in which almost all of the terrorists portrayed in the PSAs were white Americans.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

Really! Garsh Batman. Boy, infowars is right on top and cutting edge in reporting this one. /s LOL

I agree...kinda stating the obvious there.

Most of us have known that for a long time, at least since 2009 when the infamous  Missouri Information Analysis Center Report was released - the first document I am aware of that started this trend away from muslims and instead painting Paul and Baldwin supporters, libertarians, owners of gold and others as potential "terrorists".

Apparently this is more of the same but this time from the DHS, a federal agency.

I didn't see any references at the link, but my guess is that they are getting their propaganda blueprint from the ADL and SPLC.

remember several years before the missouri document was the police or fed memo out of arizona, if i recall correctly, that stated similar things; that those who defend the constitution and 'police the police' , and pro-lifers, etc. were possible terrorists. it made a pretty big splash at the time.

this is relevent because it is a new document straight from dhs. it is good to have. so instead of merely contending the obvious, it can be shown to doubters in black and white.

To a despot any longing by the people for freedom is a threat in their paranoiac psychotic reality. Again and again I make the point that the people we are up against are not sane as we understand the term. Merely having money or a $10,000 suit does not make someone sane, and they are not sane. To understand them and to look at the world as they do, wrapped in their delusions and hidden terror of others, requires looking through a very dark lens.

Sane people do not murder millions simply to amass more wealth and power. Deep down inside, well hidden, they fear being brought to account for their legions of black crimes, and that is part of the key to understanding their mindset of chronic fear which causes them to in turn attempt to crush all others so that they are not a threat. The problem is that everyone in the world, plus the figures of their psychotic delusions, is not enough to quench their fear. Given their mindset they would willingly kill every man, woman, and child on this planet and still they would not escape the insane fear which engulfs them.

Agreed. The more we can document in their own words their hatred of our freedoms and how they truly regard those who aspire to be free the better. Of course it has been long obvious to those of us who have been following the issues, BUT there are still large numbers of people who just don't get it - and too many who are so cowering in fear that they don't want to get it.

I'm still looking for that actual report, thus far all I've seen is a blog referencing it.

Does anyone have the link to the actual report?

it's directly linked at the start of the article. Happy independence day! :-)

he study focuses on Americans who hold beliefs shared by the vast majority of conservatives

Ha! What a laugh. What reality is this guy living in? If "conservatives" held these beliefs then Robamny wouldn't be the Republican candidate for president.

If one wants to see what "conservatives" believe, one only has to go to FR or LP. A 21st century conservative believes in the police state, big government (synonymous with the police state) and war. To the modern day conservative, and his liberal counterpart, individual liberty is an anachronism that has no place in today's world.

Calling Ron Paul an isolationist is like calling your neighbor a hermit because he doesn't come over and break your window - unknown

Running around screaming “9/11" at Obama critics to justify his ongoing American violence in the Muslim world is like running around screaming “lung cancer” to justify heavy cigarette smoking. It isn’t those of us who oppose American aggression in the Muslim world who need manipulative, exploitative reminders about 9/11; it’s those who cheer for these policies who are making a follow-up attack ever more likely. - Glenn Greenwald
