NEW YORK (AFP) - A large-scale metal sculpture by American artist David Smith has become the most expensive work of contemporary art ever sold at auction, fetching 23.8 million dollars at Sotheby's in New York. ADVERTISEMENT ZIP code where you park at night:

Five bidders competed for Smith's "Cubi XXVII" which was the starting lot at a Wednesday evening sale of 54 contemporary works that brought in 114.5 million dollars.

The 1965 sculpture was finally snapped up by Manhattan dealer Larry Gagosian at nearly twice its high estimate of 12 million dollars.

Experts attributed the record price to the fact that most of Smith's works are in museums or permanent collections and therefore make extremely rare auction appearances.

"This exceedingly rare work was the pinnacle of a four-decade career," said Tobias Meyer, Sotheby's worldwide head of contemporary art and the auctioneer for the evening.

The second best price of the evening was the 9.2 million dollars paid for "Jackie Frieze," one of two works in which Andy Warhol assembled portraits of Jackie Kennedy in a frieze format.

Please note that the last couple of sentences are mine. Also, this article proves that I do not charge nearly enough for my work.

Modern art is a giant swindle racket run by deformed souls with the twisted obssessiveness of pederasts, it's a bunch of hateful lemmings who circle jerk each other and talk about how much they enjoy the smell of each other's farts. Those with ability are shunned with flagwords like "kitch" and "traditional", and those who somehow conjure the very most bleak, demoralizing and depressing "works" become the darlings of the diseased Bedlam called "the art world".

Someday, in a better future time, we'll see women's clothing designed by heterosexual men, and we'll have art created by actual artists instead of masturbating malcontents inflicting their sickness on humanity with their dismal emissions.

Gold and silver are real money, paper is but a promise.

The perfect way to launder drug money?

I was partially kidding, but if you think about it.. this is a picture perfect money laundering venue.

Imagine: You're sitting on a mountain of cold, hard cash from whatever illegal enterprise you're involved with.. What do you do? Go buy a mansion and a yacht? Deposit it into your checking? HA! Fat chance..

You'll get reported and popped because there's no source for these funds. If you make $48,000 a year, but spend $100,000, you're shortly going to find your ass in jail.

So, you need a source of income to go legit with your dollars.. Okay, so you start a business to launder it? HA! A better idea, but also dangerous and complicated.

Let's say it's a restrauant, for example. (A good venue fot this kind of thing, but still problematic.)

If you claim XXX dollars in sales, it's possible that some day you'll be audited and they will claim that you've only ordered XXX worth of supplies. If it's not enough to cover your sales, then they're going to want to know where the extra dough came from. If it's MORE than your sales, they're going to want to know where the extra money went.

Now, you can order enough to match your sales and either throw it away or sell it on the "black" market, but now things are getting complicated and you're adding points of failure.

However with art, it's getting better. You just do like this dipstick has done and weld some sheetmetal together, then get a friend of yours to submit the money as a closed bid. After your receive it, it's yours to spend.

I guess the absolutely perfect way would be a spectator event with multiple participants.. like a Rodeo, for example.

You just sell as many tickets as you "need" to sell and there's no tracability what so ever.

Elliott, this is one of the best posts I've ever read on any subject. I think you completely summed up the utter decadence and depravity of what passes for the "Arts" in our post modern world. I couldn't add a syllable. Well said.

That may be true, but some of them don't want to deal with the credit card companies and pay the fee that they assess per transaction. at least that's what i've been told.

Or just raking in tax free profit. Not that I care, I hate taxes too, but a clever auditor could probably catch allot of these people.

It's no coincidence that many mob connected persons run restrauants. It's a perishable product, so there's built in inventory shrinkage that can be explained away with relative ease and you can have as many "customers" as you would need..

In addition, they can skew the average ticket to do more with less.

That's true too..

I don't take credit cards here, just on principle.

Ya know, why should it cost me money just so they can hook my customer for 14 percent or better?

Shouldn't they be paying me a small percentage just for allowing them the opportunity to rake in larger percentages from my customers, their dollars and my labor?

Here's the thing about art. The beholder of said art, and the deepness of their pockets, weighed against the Artist's idea of self-aggrandizing importance, is what creates the price for said object' de Art.

As far as women's clothing being designed by homosexuals who hate women for their bodies, I agree.

I put my engineering skills to work making lingerie for my wife recently. Since I'm well versed in the manufacturing processes of plastics, and metals, I have decided to start to work on things that will greatly improve the lives of women like my wife. My wife cannot find a bra that fits worth a damn, and so, as a guy who loves boobs, am going to do the job that Straight American men won't do.

I'm going to make a bra that fits, flatters, and is durable to the point of being nigh invulnerable. Plus, can be machine washed or hand washed with minimal fuss. Why??? Because I love boobies.

I'll let you folks know when I've come up with a working prototype. I'm only two steps away from being the ultimate husband on planet Earth.

So many morons, so few bullets.
