Libya's Olympic committee president was taken from his car by gunmen in Tripoli on Sunday and his whereabouts are unknown, colleagues said.

Nabil Elalem was in his car with a colleague when two vehicles carrying men in military-style clothing blocked them off, another colleague, Arafat Jwan, said.

"They told him he was needed and he had to go with them. He asked if he could take his phone and laptop with him and then the cars sped away with him," Jwan said, adding that Elalem's colleague was left in the car. It was not clear who the men were.

Ezz-Edine Journaz, a spokesman for the committee, told an independent Libyan television channel that the men had claimed to be from the army and had asked him to come with them "politely". He said the group of about eight or nine were armed.

Sports and youth minister Fethi Tarbel said he had been informed about the matter and called for Elalem's immediate release.

"We condemn this kind of action. Whoever did this are criminals," he said. "This goes against the revolution, this brings us back to the Gaddafi culture … I don't know if he had any issues with anyone."

Since the end of last year's uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, the interim government has struggled to control myriad armed groups who refuse to lay down their weapons and often take the law into their own hands and detain people.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

It's going to be interesting to see what happens here when the laws are passed telling everyone to "lay down their weapons."

Why do I see most people complying?

You're obviously looking in the wrong places !

For more than a few of us, that will happen about like 'turn in your gold.'

I live w/in proximity to the Crapitol region.

geez, I'm really sorry to know that. City-life ain't for me anymore - though it used to be.

I've read enough of your posts to know that you are a believer. I am an unconventional believer - and I trust God to lead me where He chooses. If you do the same you'll always be where God wants ya !

Having had a good life - I am looking forward to an honorable death ! Once I had reached certain conclusions about life and death the real question became one of deciding how much tolerance I have for the ghouls usurping this reality - and how much stomach I have for the remedy.
