As a former government school teacher and from German-Russian ancestors who worked hard and were responsible for family and friends, I feel the future with the present government is one of too much interference with OUR CHOICES AND DECISIONS. I have been self-employed for 30 years in the resort business. During the last 10 years the EPA, ODEQ, and other government bodies have stifled us and are preventing us from giving the public a good and reasonable service. We have an excellent cash-flow business but potential buyers are scared of the future and thus cannot complete a sale. We have a home at Atenas, Costa Rica. We have no need for heating or air-conditioning at the +3000 elevation. The people there are like Americans 50 years ago honest and caring and to whom families are very important. We use private healthcare from CIMA, which is part of Baylor University. The costs are 1/5 of the USA. The food and restaurants are excellent, with a large farmers market on Fridays. We are so sad that we have to leave the USA to have a better life in Costa Rica. And finally, Reckoner Nebraska Jen writes to say... I have lived abroad now on four continents Europe, Asia, North America and South America. Im currently a resident of Cuenca, Ecuador, a nice-enough place hyped beyond all reason. But Im currently in the process of moving away... Ecuador uses the US dollar and is thus infected with the same wealth-destroying inflation as the continental United States. Many who move here thinking they will escape poverty and US politics find that what they thought they were leaving is still an ever-present problem of daily life. Gold, silver, real estate, and off-the-books income streams remain the only true safe havens. Politically, what I have learned living overseas is that I like non- functional governments. Ecuadors bureaucrats are inept, corrupt, and ignorant...basically perfect if you want to be left alone! When I lived in Shanghai 8 years ago, the language and culture barrier kept me miles away from any functional bureaucracy, giving me a freedom you just cant enjoy in the US anymore. Save me from helpful government agencies and bureaucrats I like a more frontier-style life and the kind of government busybodies you can slip $20 to look the other way.
