WASHINGTON (AP) — A spokesman says former President George W. Bush is skipping the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., next month.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford says the 43rd president is enjoying his time off the political stage and respectfully has declined the party's invitation to attend the event.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will formally be nominated at the convention.

Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush, earlier this week also declined to attend.

The two former presidents have endorsed Romney.

Man, I thought it was just the old man Bush that wasn't showing up this year. Interesting to see that Jr. won't be making an appearance.

He'd be expected to speak of course, and the Mormon fer sure does not want that albatross hung around his neck. Smirk left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, and a lot of them blame him as much as Bammy for the prolonged downturn we're in.

Bush tribe is luke warm, lip service only, not one drop more for Oromney.

Also absent so far are the Nixons/Eisenhowers that were so gung ho for Obongo in 2008.

Backroom maneuvering and dealing has been going on for some time.
