LONDON – Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou was banished from the Olympic Games on Wednesday after making racist comments and expressing right-wing sentiments on Twitter. Papachristou was scheduled to fly to London next week from her training base in Athens when the Hellenic Olympic Committee – Greek’s Olympic federation – made the decision to expel her from the team. [ Photos:Voula Papachristou ] Papachristou, 23, made a racist and tasteless comment on her Twitter account, @papaxristoutj, that highlighted the number of African immigrants in Greece. “With so many Africans in Greece … at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!,” Papachristou wrote. She also reposted a comment from controversial Greek politician Ilias Kasidiaris, who has strongly criticized his government’s “soft” immigration policy. [ Talk back: What's your take on the Greek controversy? ] The West Nile virus was first discovered in Uganda, but cases have recently been found during the European summer. Papachristou’s tweet was met with a flood of angry responses, but she didn’t respond until Wednesday, when it became clear she might lose her spot in the Olympics. “I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account,” she said. “I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.” By then, it was too late. Greek Olympic chiefs consulted with senior members of the Greek parliament, including aides to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, before making their decision. Part of the reason for the expulsion was to punish Papachristou for her actions, but the decision was also made in hopes of avoiding a backlash from anti-racism protestors at the Games. The financial crisis gripping Greece – where strict austerity measures have affected the lives of millions – has forced the country to rely heavily on corporate sponsorship to fund its Olympic program. Officials feared that contributors may rethink their commitment if Papachristou remained on the team. “There is never a good time for something like this to happen,” one source with knowledge of the decision told Yahoo! Sports. “But this is especially a bad time. Action had to happen. To not act would have been negligent and place Greece in a very negative light.” Greek officials later released an official statement announcing Papchristou would be placed "outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement."

I'd say... Who cares what she said in a joke? World's too effin' PC. I bet most people, even those who complained about what she posted, have told jokes that would make that one seem pretty tame.

Well I am going to boycott the "PC games" as they should always be called now. I have a feeling this young woman is about to do better with that one little innocent statement thrown out as a joke than she would have done if she won a gold medal in every event she was suppose to be in.

If they are accepting all these African immigrants to Greece then what are my odds of being accepted being a white America? Probably very low.

Advice to celebrities, would-be celebrities, and anyone with common sense. Don't post on Twitter (it's for Twits), or Facebook. Just plain stay away from "social media" altogether. The number stories of people getting into trouble by publicly putting their foot in their mouths on a social network (geez, at least use a pseudonym) continues to grow. Democrats don't mind war as long as they can have big government. Republicans don't mind big government as long as they can have war. Who cares what she said in a joke? If it was some black athelete ragging on "whiteys" or "crackers", I bet nobody would have blinked an eye. World's too effin' PC. I bet most people, even those who complained about what she posted, have told jokes that would make that one seem pretty tame. Yep, that joke would be something Leno might even tell. Ridiculous. Last night I was putting up a missing cat poster on a short stretch of road near my house. Some middle age hag pulled up slow, I was expecting her to say she's seen her. Instead, she says "I'm calling the police". I felt like flipping her off and telling her to go fuck herself, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. People are just too caught up in other people's business these days, apparently they have WAY too much time on their hands. Although the Olympics were supposed to promote international friendship, etc., I had never heard of anyone being disqualified for not getting into that spirit. Goodness knows, they never kicked out any of the Arab teams for refusing to play against Israeli teams in previous Olympiads. The old US/international Olympic official, Avery Brundage, had very conspicuous racial attitudes, but he's been dead more than 20 years. And, of course, if it were not for the twittering and the internet, this young lady could have gotten away with it. Only because of these relatively recent innovations was she nailed. Without the internet, she could have played, could have brought her medals home with her and then taken out full page newspaper ads proclaiming her ethnic animus.
