Researchers in the United States made the "completely unexpected" finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab. They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine. Chemotherapy works by inhibiting reproduction of fast-dividing cells such as those found in tumours. The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival. "The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected," study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP. The protein was taken up by tumour cells neighbouring the damaged cells. "WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumour cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy," said Nelson. In cancer treatment, tumours often respond well initially, followed by rapid regrowth and then resistance to further chemotherapy. Rates of tumour cell reproduction have been shown to accelerate between treatments. "Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells... may directly contribute to enhanced tumour growth kinetics," wrote the team. The researchers said they confirmed their findings with breast and ovarian cancer tumours. The result paves the way for research into new, improved treatment, said Nelson. "For example, an antibody to WNT16B, given with chemotherapy, may improve responses (kill more tumour cells)," he said in an email exchange. "Alternatively, it may be possible to use smaller, less toxic doses of therapy." Poster Comment: From among many interesting testimonials: Katfish My oncologist told me straight out "We are about to poison you in the hope we can kill cancer cells before the chemo kills you." I was fully informed that the remaining cells could initiate an immune response and create a harder to kill cancer later. I had one treatment, went into a near coma for 5 days, came out of it and said "no more". Chemo is vicious.+46 faithntruth Needle biopsy causes tumor seeding in the needle track. Different types of biopsies are associated with different rates of metastasis and both types of needle biopsy have the highest rates. Chemo suppresses the immune system which helps the cancer and opens one up to other problems like fungal colonization (half of cancer patients in a hospital had aspergillosis found during autopsy). Now they find the body responds to chemo in a way that helps protect the cancer. Radiation has radical side effects, like destroying bone and causing wide range damage to tissue. Small tumors can be killed in place with radio frequency ablation (RFA which cooks a very precise spot with heat) leaving scar tissue. It can be done on a wide variety of body parts including bone, lung, liver, and more. (Do NOT believe an oncologist who tells you it is only good for a type of cancer you do not have: research yourself. If the oncologist does not have the equipment, he/she is not keeping up with the advances for how it is used. This happened with a friend TWO days ago!) Cold is also used to freeze tumors in place, but RFA has better results. After walking the cancer road with my sister as she slowly and agonizingly died while undergoing traditional cancer treatment, I got to see firsthand what their treatments did to her while failing miserably to have any effect on her cancer. If I ever find I have something suspicious, I will not allow a biopsy, I will not get radiation, I will not take chemo. I would have any suspicious growth removed surgically or treated in place with RFA. If they want to look at cells in the lab, they can take the whole growth out and do so. If they refuse those terms I will just go home and pursue alternatives like artemisia annua (artimisinin is the extract), and other nutrients to support organ and immune system health. For those of you who are survivors, I am happy for you...for those still fighting, do your own research and do not settle for what is available from closed minded, old fashioned, limited care facilities.+26 pav Washington, District of Columbia Chemo kills, I would be surprised to see how much longer patients live if they didn't take chemo. Oh, you'll get another 6 months if you do chemo. #$%$ plus your quality of life is so poor is it really worth it. These pharmacy companies are making like 5,000-20,000$ for one treatment. They might know it doesn't work, but can't turn down the money..+14 Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top Page Up Full Thread Page Down Bottom/Latest Begin Trace Mode for Comment # 1.

Uh - about chemotherapy being able to cause death to healthy cells - no sh*t, Sherlock ( no insult directed at you, Tatarewicz). But why has a "study" been funded to come to such an obvious conclusion? Chemotherapy is a personal choice. It can extend life. Big Pharma making a profit is a factor for discussion, only if it's NOT your life that hangs in the balance.
