It's a typical Pacific island that was occupied off and on over the decades up until the 1960's, so debris around the island means nothing. The reason for the search around this island is that supposedly, analysis of radio transmissions in the days after her disappearance revealed about half of them to be credibly from her, and that this island appears to be the one referred to in those transmissions.
I think it was given a flyover at the time but no plane was spotted. It's speculated that the plane might have already been swept out to sea by then.
