Did you know that men aren’t the only ones that have prostates? It has long been recognized that certain organs develop differently depending on the influence of either testosterone or estrogen in the womb. Some organs do not develop completely; an example in males is the cerebral lobe that is responsible for sense of direction. In females, the portion of the brain that approximates size is frequently malformed (this can be beneficial for the males). Certain sexual organs in males and females are embryologically similar in design and function although they can look quite different (an explanation of this fact is beyond the scope of this article). Up until very recently, it was thought that women had a distinct set of lubricating ducts located just inside the walls of the vagina called the Skene’s glands. However, in 2002, an Italian researcher (trust the Italians) demonstrated that these glands were capable of producing not only lubrication but also at times of orgasm (apparently some women do), they release fluid that is similar in composition to that of a man’s prostate. These secretions include ejaculatory enzymes and even prostate specific antigen (PSA) which is the marker that is often elevated when diagnosing prostate cancer in men. A 2007 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine (the most widely read medical journal) also confirmed the existence of a female prostate gland by biochemical fluid analysis along with high-definition ultrasound and intra-vaginal electron microscopy (and you thought a pelvic exam was uncomfortable). Thus, with all this new evidence, Dr. Skene will no longer be able to brag about his glands since they are now commonly referred to as the female prostate in the medical literature.
