Health See other Health Articles Title: The Dirty Dozen: Foods With the Most Pesticides The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has just released its 2012 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce revealing which foods have the highest and lowest levels of pesticides. The Guide compiles data from USDA reports that are kind of indecipherable to the general public according to the EWG's senior research analyst, Sonya Lunder. People would be surprised to know, Lunder continues, but about 70% of conventionally grown produce has pesticides on it. Even washing your produce after you bring it home doesn't eliminate the risk of contamination as the foods on the list were tested after being power-washed. The Dirty Dozen lists the 12 fruits and vegetables which tested for the highest pesticide levels when grown conventionally: 1. Apples 2. Celery 3. Sweet bell peppers 4. Peaches 5. Strawberries 6. Nectarines 7. Grapes 8. Spinach 9. Lettuce 10. Cucumbers 11. Blueberries 12. Potatoes Green beans and leafy greens like Kale are also included as foods that may contain pesticide residues of special concern, but are not in the top 12. But just because your favorite fruits or vegetables appear on the dirty dozen list doesn't mean you have to stop eating them. The EWG, along with renowned medical expert on natural health and wellness Dr. Andrew Weil, explain that the conventionally grown versions of these foods often contain high levels of pesticides, but if you buy certified organic label options you can achieve a measurable drop in tissue accumulations of pesticides. When it comes to his personal eating habits regarding the dirty dozen, Dr. Weil says, If I can't get organic versions of those, I'm not going to eat them. The guide isn't all bad news though. A list of the top 15 least contaminated foods, called The Clean 15 lets consumers know which foods are safe to purchase even when grown conventionally: 1. Onions 2. Sweet Corn 3. Pineapples 4. Avocado 5. Cabbage 6. Sweet peas 7. Asparagus 8. Mangoes 9. Eggplant 10. Kiwi 11. Cantaloupe 12. Sweet potatoes 13. Grapefruit 14. Watermelon 15. Mushrooms Many of the foods on this list have an outer peel which when removed, also removes most pesticides. Consumers can save money by buying the nonorganic versions of these low-risk of contamination foods. The EWG's Guide to Pesticides can be used to determine which foods you should buy organic, and which are safe to eat when grown conventionally. Related. An "expert" claimed on C2C the other night that a fruit tree can uptake bacteria from the soil, contaminating its fruit. First I've heard of this.
