Enerex Botanicals Ltd. paid for an ad in the VancouverSun on Thursday that claimed their product was alternative option to combating whooping cough with vaccinations. The ad totes the oil as the natural way to help combat whooping cough and your top-level defense for protecting yourself from whooping cough. Medical health officer Paul Van Buynder sent a letter the same day ordering the company publish a retraction and apology about their claim, which Fraser Health says has never been proven scientifically. Such claims are a danger to public health, especially in the middle of a whooping cough outbreak, and are a violation of the Public Health Act, said Van Buynder in a statement. Fraser Health cited Section 15 of the British Columbia Public Health Act, which says a person must not willingly cause a health hazard, or act in a manner that the person knows, or ought to know, will cause a health hazard. They claim the company has produced a health hazard by discouraging people from getting vaccinated against whooping cough and hampering their ability to manage the current outbreak. Enerex manager Reza Saffari did not return calls before time of press. According to Fraser Health, there have been 500 reported cases of whooping cough in the Lower Mainland this year. The disease can be life-threatening to babies and the elderly, and often results in hospitalization. The claims of this company, unsubstantiated by any scientific support, risk sending a message to people that natural products produce an immunity to the transmission of infectious diseases, said Van Buynder.
