Ron Paul: The GOP 'Is Not My Party,' Still Not Endorsing Romney

By ASHLEY PORTERO: Subscribe to Ashley's RSS feed

Former Republican presidential contender Ron Paul isn't just done with politics -- he may be done with the mainstream Republican party as a whole.

The longtime Texas congressman, essentially the father of the modern American Libertarian movement, on Friday told Bloomberg News the GOP "is not his party," in response to a question about whether, when reflecting on his campaign, he is unhappy with the direction the party has taken this election cycle.

"Well, it's not my party. I don't like politics at all, and I think both parties are Keynesian economists and both parties support the positions that I don't like. So the party in many ways is irrelevant," said the three-time presidential candidate, an avowed enemy of the public spending championed by British economist John Maynard Keynes.

The conversation started after Paul was asked whether Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention speech made him more likely to endorse the now official Republican presidential nominee. Paul, who has refused to offer Romney his full endorsement, basically responded with a polite, but resounding, "no."

"The speech is what I would expect. It was upbeat, and the people there loved it. But I still remain very, very skeptical of hearing anything that will change the course of history. We have a debt problem, a spending problem, but how many things did he list to cut?" Paul said. "I don't see where there was any significant change in policy. ... Hopefully, [Romney's] right, and he's going to create all these jobs, but, quite frankly, only the markets create jobs. Governments can't and presidents don't do it. "

But while Paul does not have faith that a Romney presidency will usher in an age of economic change, he said the success of his own presidential campaign -- he said he received at least 2 million votes during the Republican primaries -- demonstrates that his libertarian-leaning beliefs, which stress fiscal responsibility and personal liberty, has a hold on the next generation of Americans.

"Our appeal right now is to independents and Democrats ... These people want their freedom. They want some money, they want to bring the troops home, they want the wars to end. They want the spending to quit," Paul said. "I am super- energized and optimistic about what's happening, because the ideas are changing. What I'm talking about is an ideological revolution."

Paul ran for the presidency as a libertarian in 1988 and then under the Republican ticket in 2008 and 2012.

Well, they burned Ron bad & now he's mad. Romney and his ilk deserve this. These men are not gentlemen. They are in fact savages. I fully dislike them as much as I despise Obama.

RP will be on Jay Leno this week, and a third party run is rumored to be in the works.

I hope that Ron Paul tears them a new a$$h*le.

It looks to me like the GOP (Gestapo Operations Party) are trying to lose as old man Bush did in years gone by. They have rudely disenfranchised the real T- Party crowd by banning certain delegates at the convention. This behavior should have had a negative impact on others that are interested in fair play within the "Party" - however, neither fairness nor the ability to see through the fraud calling itself the RNC appear to concern these pompous asses.

Many of Ron Paul's supporters were in fact true Republicans while others may or may not have been Libertarians or simply independent folks that are fed up with the fascist conditions consuming both parties and destroying America. One thing is obvious to me after the Republican Convention. The people have no voice, no choice, and now need to sit down and shut up.

Be interesting to know what went awry between Oromney and Ron.

To my thinking, Ron CANNOT AND WILL NOT DISAVOW THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. He is between a rock and a hard place as his sons future depends on him.

Third party run is now too late. Rons supporters that wore blindfolds this time are not about to pony up money and support in a hopeless cause.

Ron is going neutral, every man for him self.

Paul could have ridden in to the convention on a white horse with sword in hand, ready to fight for his ideals. He choose not to for whatever reason.

Had I donated this time, I would ask for my money back.

Be that the case, it would indeed benefit the Bush cabal.

I have said for some time, the Bush tribe would enjoy a Obongo win.

Ron Paul is a traitor.

That is a harsh word.

With no physical evidence, lets say, intentionally or otherwise, Ron Paul has been very useful to the system.

In four years, two aborted presidential runs, Ron has kept the conservative segment from being a force to reckon with.

Neutered if you will, voluntarily by good people with misplaced loyalty.

If (and it looks possible) Ron Paul runs on a third party, it may siphon off just enough anti-Obama votes to assure Obama's re-election.

Perot...

It has always been my opinion that the "system" did not like what they saw with Perot in 92.

Perot tallied nearly 20 million votes. That total was like a fire alarm going off. The majority that Perot gathered were pubs but enough dems also went with him that the "system" realized that lots of money and the right candidate just might overturn their happy camp.

Just perhaps a false Pied Piper was hired or at least encouraged to run a non race on the right.

That is a harsh judgement & forgive me if I have put too strong a construction on your comments.

This situation is a conundrum for Paul though. If he takes his marbles off the table and walks, he's chickening out. If he undertakes a challenge under some third force, he'll help elect Obama and he'll be seen as a double crosser.

True...

When Rand went to Oromney on knee pads, that was a clinker that no one had envisioned. Something went awry

Ron Paul can make sure Oromney loses and Obongo wins, or he might be able to reverse that. Ron had a good hand to sit down to the table with but at present kit seems to be frittered away.

Oromney has one month to get Paul on board or he may well ride off into the sunset. If that were to happen the Bush cabal would be overjoyed.

An Obongo win is a Bush win.

It would not surprise me, given the shabby treatment he and his supporters received, that he's putting the pressure on for some kind of concessions and or recognition.

Time's getting short and Romney needs every bit of help he can get in those swing states.

Either that or an endorsement of Gary Johnson.

Haven't received a definitive answer yet if RP can assume the Libertarian Party nominee status from Johnson.

Americans Elect was attempting to gain ballot status in all 50 states, but I don't think they were able to field a candidate.

Depending upon the mood of the Ron Paul-ites and their choices come November ie., Libertarian, Gary Johnson, or simply staying home - no one should discount Obama's chances for re-(s)election.

You could be right about the benefit to the Bush bunch. When things get worse regardless of who is selected this cycle (and they will) morons across the country will somehow recall how good things were under Bush !

If Oromney stumbles and loses, that puts him out of the way for good. Bush tribe would have a cake walk into power one more time.

Bush cabal will have pulled off what the Kennedys tried but failed.
