An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale has jolted the east coast of Greenland, but there have been no reports of injuries and no tsunami alert has been issued.

The tremor happened at 9:43 a.m. local time (1343 GMT) on Thursday and was centered 428 kilometers (266 miles) east-northeast of Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland, at a depth of 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), Reuters reported.

Ittoqqortoormiit, with a population of around 500 people, is a settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in eastern Greenland.

The meteorological institute in Norway’s Tromso said the quake could be felt at Jan Mayen, a Norwegian island about 600 kilometers (370 miles) east of Greenland.
