The ‘alert’ was a humorous way to give advice to citizens on how to prepare for such real threats as hurricanes, earthquakes, pandemics and terrorist attacks.

Homeland Security issues ZOMBIE warning! Actually, it's part of a preparedness campaign for disasters.

If zombies take over, the government wants you to be prepared.

The Homeland Security Department warned citizens on Thursday that the “zombies are coming,” and urged them to be ready for a walking-dead apocalypse, The Associated Press reported.

The zombie “warning” is part of a public health campaign calling for citizens to be ready for disaster — to know to stock up on food, batteries and water, and to keep extra changes of clothes and medication on hand.

Of course, those same preparations will also come in handy in case of a hurricane, earthquake, pandemic or terrorist attack, and that’s the idea behind the campaign.

In an online seminar, emergency planners were told to use zombies to get their point across that emergency preparation — for anything — is important.

The Centers for Disease Control used the same tactic last year with its zombie apocalypse social media campaign. The agency posted a blog post with detailed recommendations of how to survive a zombie attack.

A CDC spokesperson explained at the time that the campaign was introduced to get Americans interested in its annual campaign for hurricane preparedness.

“I worry we try the same thing every year and I didn’t know how many people we were actually engaging,” Dave Daigle of the CDC told The Los Angeles Times. “Let’s face it — preparedness and public health are not exactly sexy topics.”

In a statement, the CDC later confirmed it does not know of any zombie-like virus or condition. ZOMBIE8N_2_WEB The initial idea came from a campaign for the “Zombie Apocalypse” created by the CDC.

Comments Pandering to the idiots, leads to a dumbing down of America. Zombie alert sounds like some kind of movie or silly situation. Emergency or somber situations call for real, hard truth and to the point. How about just alerting or warning people about whatever the emergency really is? .

Limey The emergency could be a class 10 solar flare that could possibly occur within the next few years. This size of flare could fry just about every electrical component in all the technology we depend on to survive even though this event will not kill life forms directly. No one has a clue exactly when this might actually happen although it is predicable that sun does periodically let loose enormous flares of this nature. The last one of this magnitude was in 1859 and we were only dependent on telegraph systems at that time.Apparently telegraph poles and paper burst into flames and the whole system was so infused with electrical power from the flare it ran itself for a time even though the power was switched off.The flare has to be pointed directly at us for it to be a danger and if it happens there is very little time to do anything about it.It could happen at any moment without warning and when the CMEs, as they are known, hit earth bang goes your cell phone and everything else you use a thousand times a day.Obviously most Americans are more comfortable with zombies than they are the truth, hence this silly poster. It is so easy to joke about zombies that this very serious potential event gets totally lost in ridicule and laughter.

pbraasch First the CDC issues this statement back on May 16th, 2011...

Now, Homeland Scurity issues a similar statement.....hmmmmmm......

Always with tongue planted in cheek....rigggght

I guarantee one thing....if something serious was to come down the pike, you're government sure as hell wouldn't warn you about it.

It is nice know that our taxes taken by force from us are being used to entertain us like this. I guess that is what they bought all that ammo for, to shoot the zombies.

God is always good!

to know to stock up on food, batteries and water, and to keep extra changes of clothes and medication on hand.

How do any of these items stop zombies?
