The Lebanese army has confiscated a large consignment of arms and ammunition destined for foreign-sponsored insurgents fighting against the Syrian government, Press TV reports.
According to informed sources in Lebanon, various heavy and light weapons were seized on Saturday when the army intercepted a pickup truck in a region near the border with Syria.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that eight Syrian citizens were arrested in the incident.
Meanwhile, the Syrian army destroyed five vehicles transporting weapons for insurgents on the main highway between Damascus and the northwestern city of Aleppo on Saturday.
On May 17, Lebanese soldiers stopped a pickup truck in the village of Joura in the border region of Masharih al-Qaa and found crates of weapons destined for Syrian insurgents.
In late April, the Lebanese navy seized three shipping containers of weapons, which were bound for Syrian insurgent groups, on board a ship that had set sail from a port in Libya.
The cargo contained machine guns, artillery shells, rockets, rocket launchers, and explosives.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.
Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey of arming the opposition.
