U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, continuing his attacks on Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren, unveiled a new television ad today blasting the Harvard professor for her purported Native American heritage.

“Elizabeth Warren is trying to put questions about her heritage behind her,” the ad quotes a reporter saying. “She is facing tough questions about whether she claimed to be a minority for professional gain.”

The 30-second spot comes days after Brown pressed Warren about the issue during their first debate last week. Warren listed herself as a minority on law school directories, but has been unable to prove any Cherokee or Delaware tribe heritage.

Warren, during the Jim & Margery show on 96.9 WTKK this morning, addressed the issue when a caller asked her if she felt bad for checking the box in the law school directory and potentially taking an opportunity from a real Native American.

“I know what I know from my family. I didn’t check a box to go to college. I didn’t check a box to go to law school. The only box I checked was in a directory to help people find me. I didn’t take anyone else’s job,” she said. “I think it’s pretty clear, the job I got is the job I got because of my teaching qualifications.”

Warren, who was pressed on why she doesn’t release her personnel records to prove she didn’t gain from her self-identification, would only say she’s proud of her heritage.

“I think the discussion has been ended I think the question has been asked and answered,” she said of whether she benefited from her Native American listing. Asked why she stopped listing herself after she was hired at Harvard Law School, she said, “Nothing happened from the directory, and I just thought this doesn’t make any sense.”

Brown has also targeted Warren for her work defending an insurance company against asbestos victims, part of a campaign shift as he goes on offense against the Cambridge Democrat who has been ahead of him in some recent polls.

Warren discussed the attacks briefly on the show, saying, “This is just the wrong direction to go.”

On the asbestos case, she added that victims also criticized Brown’s harsh tone.

“They have said that Scott Brown by jumping in on this has really crossed a line,” she said.

Too many nights in the medicine lodge with strong pipe.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken
