Health See other Health Articles Title: What PSA score means One question I get asked more than any other is how can I get my PSA down? I get asked that by men who have an enlarged prostate, others who have prostatitis and even by some men who have prostate cancer. You may not think that is such a strange question, but I do. You see, I rarely get asked how can I make my prostate healthy again or how can I slow this cancer down? It is as if the PSA is seen as central to the disease rather than the prostate. Because our introduction to prostate issues is our PSA score we confuse PSA with prostate health and that turns into an obsession about PSA. PSA is only a very volatile and pretty unreliable measurement. It measures antibodies in the blood that are specific to the prostate and is one very general indicator, that may tell you something is not right with your prostate. There were great hopes initially that the PSA test would single out those who have cancer. We now know that is not the case and just how unreliable it is. In fact PSA is so unreliable that you can have a healthy prostate and a high PSA and conversely a low PSA and a cancerous Prostate. Here is an example email from Juan. Are they any more reliable? My reply was: All these things are statistical constructs that seek to make PSA a more real measure. The problem with statistics is that they apply to a group not to an individual. So if at a certain score doctors will tell you that you have a 30% chance of having Prostate cancer that isn't strictly true. What the statistics show is that in a group of 100 men with that measure, 30 will have prostate cancer. But It does not tell you whether you will be one of the 30 or one of the 70. So on an individual basis, it actually tells you nothing at all. As an individual your chances of having prostate cancer could be greater or lesser than 30%. If you are fit, slim and a vegan you will have a better chance than an obese meat every day eater. So my conclusion is, by all means have PSA readings done but dont get frogmarched by the results into having invasive treatments performed on you or taking toxic drugs. Put more effort into changing your diet as per my guide, and taking my supplements. Look inwards and feel if you are sick or healthy watch your symptoms (if any) with care and see if they improve or not. All that will put your PSA results into context. Just do not take PSA results too seriously. They do not deserve that degree of seriousness. But on the other hand, respect the results as a potential early warning of something going on in your prostate. Do not ignore them either.
