SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp opened its Windows 8 operating system for pre-orders on Friday, setting the price for an upgrade to the full version of the software at $70 for a DVD pack.

Users can also wait for launch on October 26 to download the system onto their computers for $40, an offer price that will expire at the end of January. PCs running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8.

Shoppers can reserve the software pack at Microsoft's own stores, Amazon.com, Best Buy, Staples and elsewhere. Microsoft has not yet announced the price of the full software to install from scratch, as opposed to the upgrade. The current price for a comparable version of Windows 7 is $200.

Any customer who buys, or already bought, a Windows 7 PC between June 2 and the end of January 2013 will be able to get an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15, a move designed to prevent a drop-off in PC sales before the launch of Windows 8.

Microsoft also said PC makers such as Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony were also now taking pre-orders for machines with Windows 8 pre-installed.

The world's largest software company did not mention its own Surface tablet PC, which is expected on the market at the same time as Windows 8. Microsoft has not revealed the price of the product it hopes will challenge Apple Inc's iPad.

(This story was corrected in the third graph to show Microsoft has not announced price for full software)

You couldn't pay me 70 dollars to take it.

None of the reviews that I've seen of 8 make me want it.

Microsoft has so pissed me off with their hole ridden buggy OS that I am positive now it is intentional! They must of made some deal with the government to leave holes in their OS on purpose to let the NSA snoop anytime they want to. Only when independent programmers reverse engineer the code and find these holes do they even bother to fix them. Most non-government people that use holes in an OS don't use it to put a virus on your system, or wipe your hard drive, they use it mostly to steal from you. Using Windows is like leaving the doors of your house unlocked and going on an extended vacation. Pure foolishness.

God is always good!

These days you can get a huge hard drive and load whatever flavor of Linux on it strikes your fancy for far less than that Windows crap costs. Lots of people won't even try Linux because they have heard you have to be a geek to use it but that isn't true at all. At one time, yeah, but not now.

With web surfing, web hosting, and even most development I use Linux exclusively now.

It is intentional. They did it to gain as much market share as fast as possible. Then they had to patch it. My automatic updates download all the time to fix bugs.

Linux, for me anyway, is far superior to Microsux. Don't have to worry about viruses, all it costs is the cd or dvd you need to burn the iso file. And even people who insist on using Windows need to have a linux live cd lying around handy.

Why You Need to Have a Linux LiveCD
