CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia is doing away with high-proof grain alcohol, citing safety concerns raised by college officials and others.

The state's Alcohol Beverage Control Administration has stopped stocking 190-proof grain alcohol at its warehouse, which provides all liquor sold in the state. Although it announced the ban Wednesday, it asked liquor retailers more than a month ago to pull the potent product from their shelves.

Agency officials said they are responding to concerns by college officials, law enforcement agencies and community groups about the alcohol, which at 95 percent pure is significantly more potent than other distilled spirits.

"If you just pay attention, you'll notice that people don't drink grain at a cocktail party," said Carla Lapelle, associate dean of Student Affairs at Marshall University. "They don't go into a bar and order grain alcohol."

Lapelle said she was unaware of any incidents involving grain alcohol among students at Marshall, which already bans all alcohol on campus, but she considered the move prudent.

"It has traditionally been purchased by groups of people, often college students, who are intent on getting very drunk and who suffer serious consequences from a severe hangover to falling victim to sexual assault or even a car crash," she said.

West Virginia University spokeswoman Becky Lofstead applauded the agency's efforts, but she also could recall no specific episodes blamed on grain alcohol abuse.

At least a dozen other states ban or limit the sale of 190-proof grain alcohol. Neighboring Pennsylvania and Virginia, for instance, sell it only for medicinal or commercial use, and require a permit for its purchase.

The owner of a liquor store near WVU's main campus in Morgantown said the product was not particularly popular among students.

"People can get drunk on beer. Anything in high doses is going to be a problem," said Joseph Moser of Ashebrooke Liquor Outlet.

Grain alcohol is "a decent mover, or it was," said Phyllis Hitchcock, manager of Classic Liquors in Huntington, Marshall's home. "But the biggest sale of it was for labs and stuff. It's used as a cleaning solvent."

Moser said officials have begun distributing a 151-proof version of grain alcohol - the same potency as some vodka and rum already sold in West Virginia - through the state's warehouse.

Lofstead said 151-proof isn't as objectionable as the stronger version, which is "used in party mixes. It's pretty potent and leads to rapid intoxication and that's what we were most concerned about.'"'

Lapelle added: "Of all the liquors, grain, especially the 190-proof, is purchased solely to get drunk on."

I'm glad I'm not as stupid as the people in charge there. Or here for that matter.

American cheese is fine, anyone wanting Swiss is some sort of commie!

And I'm optimistic. See, I think you can be realistic and optimistic at the same time. I'm optimistic we'll achieve -- I know we won't achieve if we send mixed signals. I know we're not going to achieve our objective if we send mixed signals - gwbush

I conducted a few liver campaigns which involved that substance...

It's GOT to be mixed though.

Ethanol was dirt cheap compared to gasoline in the early summer (~$1.23/gal) and while taxes for it being liquor were probably pretty steep, there could be (low probability) a fear that cheap liquor store ethanol would be an alternative to gasoline if supplies got tight and/or the price rose to 6 or 7 bucks a gallon.

On an odd side note, I noticed some comments from multiple people during the Katrina spike/shortage on the fact that their vehicles were demonstrating markedly lower fuel economy. I wonder if surplus ethanol was used to "cut" existing gasoline stocks during that time?

Government blows, and that which governs least blows least...

About the importance of the mix, I'll take your word for it ;)

Interesting about Katrina. There were stations price-gouging also. Poor Louisiana, last night Anderson Cooper (with his blue, blue eyes) interviewed Gov Blanco about why families have not received even their known dead - to bury them. Wonderful FEMA refuses to pay for the DNA testing (despite earlier reported and replayed claims that they would). My personal take is that there are many dead unaccounted for, and they are still desperate to keep the official numbers down for as long as possible. This is one way to delay that revelation.

Dak, ping to Axenolith's comments on ethanol.

Grain and hawaiian punch...mmmm-mmmm, GOOD! Especially good for making uptight girls a lot friendlier at neighborhood social gatherings.
