Title: Someday, Conservatives Will Defend Obamacare

This is what I mean when I say that figuring out what the conservative position is or ought to be on this or that is like nailing jelly to a wall.

The message of this op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer is that we conservatives, and our pal Romney, are just trying to trim the crazy excesses of the LBJ liberalism of the 1960s. Why, we’re not attacking the New Deal! “Romney simply wants to protect a safety net built on conservative New Deal principles from the Great Society-like overreach of Obama.”

What were once fought tooth and nail as wealth redistribution and obvious violations of the Constitution are now “conservative New Deal principles.” The word “entitlement” is used favorably as well. Defending such things has become conservative, now that enough time has passed. We just want to administer the programs of liberalism more efficiently, and call it conservatism.

The general principle, evidently, is not that wealth redistribution is wrong in itself or necessarily opposed to conservatism. The problem is with wealth redistribution that favors constituencies not known for voting Republican.

LBJ’s programs caused all kinds of social pathologies, but according to the article, “conservative New Deal” social insurance causes no such problems.

Here is what a conservative whose philosophy is a bit broader than just the platitudes of Reagan and Romney had to say about that, even though he was speaking about Sweden.

I disagree with the author's title. I think a better title would be "Someday, Republicans Will Defend Obamacare"

Any perceived compliance with unconstitutional “laws” or orders put forth by government employees is NOT recognition of their authority; it is simply the result of carefully calculated submission to an entity exhibiting superior firepower.

AOne of the peculiar twists with the history of Medicare was that the physicians' lobby - the AMA and just about every other doctors' club - came out against it, publishing all sorts of exaggerations and even outright lies about it. But once Medicare was established despite their opposition, and they had figured out how to game the system to extract maximum money, the doctors all shut up.

We haven't seen physicians organizations come out against Obamacare -- they probably are working on ways to gouge money of that that too. We see only ad hoc organizations - and some Big Pharma as well, because the Obamacare system might have some muscle to keep drug prices reasonable.

He who controls the party shall control the present. He who prints mindless propaganda controls society.

It's got to be true, I read it in print.

Really fancy print, with sexy-looking serifs.

What's it going to take for you to be a man and stop Obama and his sans-serif agenda?

There is almost no record of Mitt Romney voting NO on serifs, why would anyone be angry about that?

Shoonra seems to know only one thing, that government is the answer to everything.

and they had figured out how to game the system to extract maximum money, the doctors all shut up.

Some studies have shown that more than 1/3 of all doctors refuse to treat medicare patients. It would appear that many of them quit complaining and did something about it.
