Researchers have known for quite some time that the caffeine intake from a daily cup of coffee shows signs of preventing the onset of Alzheimer's disease. But now, they actually understand why.

Last week, we told you that your diet may be literally killing your brain and subjecting your mind and body to a myriad of other health problem. But now, we're here to tell you that there is one type of fast-food chain you're more than welcome to frequent without sacrificing your health and well-being.

Java huts and coffee houses.

According to Medical Daily, researchers and scientists already knew that caffeine had the unique ability of suppressing the rise of amyloid plaques – Alzheimer's disease is derived from amyloid precursor protein – in the brain.

Now, researchers from the University of Illinois have conducted experiments showing that caffeine also has another unique capability: preventing brain-inflammation. Inflammation generally occurs in the pathologically vulnerable region of a brain infected with Alzheimer's disease – amyloid beta peptide desposits provide stimulation for that inflammation.

So if caffeine not only has the ability to suppress the production of amyloid plaques, but also maintains the ability to cease inflammation, the outlook is much more promising for caffeine drinkers.

From Nikki Tucker with Medical Daily:

Gregory Freund professor at the University of Illinois conducted an experiment on two groups of mice. As a way to facilitate cognitive impairment, Freund interrupted the breathing and blood flow of the mice, through a process called hypoxia. Next he allotted the mice time to recover. Following their recovery, one group was administered caffeine, whereas the other group was not.

The study revealed caffeine may minimize the impact of the chain reaction that occurs during cognitive impairment.

During the hypoxia process adenosine was released onto the brain cells, which is damaging to the brain. Adenosine molecules are what make up the fuel that powers an individual's brain. Freund observed once the so called "brain fuel" has leaked all over the brain cells, it was very similar to volatile gasoline leaking out of a tank endangering its setting.

That brain fuel leakage causes a dangerous chain reaction in the human brain. The leak activates other enzymes; the caspase-1 enzyme for example. That can instigate production of the beta cytokine IL-1 which is largely responsible for brain inflammation (and regulation of immune responses).

Inflammation is commonly referred to as “the silent killer” and brain inflammation and its link to Alzheimer's is perhaps the most alarming for seniors concerned about their mental well-being.

The good news is that caffeine acts as an antagonizer towards adenosine, effectively blocking the adenosine molecules which prevents inflammation of the brain.

Although this is one small step in the worldwide fight against Alzheimer's disease, is nothing short of a major breakthrough for researchers and chemists aiming to create safe and effective drugs to help prevent – and even reverse – cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's.

While coffee may help in keeping Alzheimer's away, it does not guarantee a person won't get it. My grandmother is 87 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 6 months ago. She's been drinking a full pot of coffee a day for decades.
