I used to live in an area with a lot of blacks and the kids never dressed up in costumes, just went door-to-door with bags. I've had people tell me they do the same thing all over the country.

I live in a "white" neighborhood and the same thing with white kids. I can appreciate that some kids, of any color, live in such straits that there's no money for a costume, but I am cranked that they don't even put on a cardboard mask. Heck, when I went to grammar school, shortly after the glaciers retreated, we'd make our own masks in class.

I remember doing paper mache masks on a balloon.

The best costume I ever had is when my Mom made strips out of a bedsheet and made me a Mummy costume.

the best costumes are the home made ones. I made a Robin Hood outfit one year. Both boys wore it multiple years. I still have the hat.

I was usually Casper the ghost. Parents were too cheap to buy a new mask.
One year I made a robot costume from a cardboard box and aluminum foil. People thought I was the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz.
