With close to two million people in New Jersey without power in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, and a national election due next week, it has been determined that the best way forward is to hand over the reign to the Department of Defense. Many polling stations will have no power and therefore no means of conducting their duties on Election Day. The deadline for processing mail in ballots has been extended until Friday, however many will still have no means of voting. The AP reports that in light of this, military trucks are to be parked in the vicinity of polling stations and will be authorized to issue and accept paper ballots Republican Secretary of State and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said voters will find a DOD truck with a well-situated National Guardsman and a big sign saying, Vote Here. Theres no reason not to vote, theres no reason not to vote today, theres certainly no reason not to vote on Tuesday, five days from today, Guadagno said. Clearly there are concerns with such plans. Aside from the fact that having armed soldiers in uniform overseeing a democratic voting process is somewhat troubling, the fact that the location of polling stations will be mobile and not announced until the last minute opens up an increased possibility of fraud. Prison Planet HIGHLIGHTS The biggest obstacle in many areas is widespread power outages. New York is preparing to gather generators for those polling places without electricity, said John Conklin, spokesman for the New York State Board of Elections. Voters will cast paper ballots, which the state uses, and deposit them into locked ballot boxes. Instead of being scanned at polling places, the ballots will be taken to a central location and tabulated there. The Daily Beast New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that in areas without electricity, voting would again be "old school." "You walk up, get a paper ballot, fill it out and hand it back in," he said. AP Many polling stations in Delaware, New York and Pennsylvania are also struggling to prepare for the election. In Nassau County, ninety percent of the countys polling stations are currently without power, those that do are running on generators, and many have been damaged by flooding. CNN Reports have already begun circulating in six different states that the machines are flipping votes, or are not calibrated correctly. Reno Gazette-Journal Nearly 6,700 Guard and Reserve forces were initially sent into New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland late Monday night, as the brunt of the storm hammered the East Coast, according to the Pentagon. That number has swelled to 7,400 as area communities continue to assess the millions in damage left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The Hill AGB/HJ Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
