DENVER — It’s traditional for Americans to threaten to move to France or Canada when their candidate loses, but this year some disappointed voters are implementing a different plan.

In the wake of the Nov. 6 election, petitions seeking to secede from the union have been filed on behalf of 23 states on the White House website, https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions. Most of the petitions contain the same wording and ask to withdraw “peacefully” from the United States in order to form independent governments.

Critics describe the effort as a bit of an overreaction. “Anyone who wants their state to secede from the union is someone whose brain has already seceded from their body,” said John Andrews, director of the conservative Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University.

Still, the White House may have to take the requests seriously. According to the website, any petition receiving 25,000 online “signatures” on the “We the People” page within 30 days of posting will receive a review by the appropriate executive department and a response from a White House staffer.

As of Monday, the Texas petition had already exceeded the 25,000-signature threshold, and the Louisiana petition was fast approaching the cutoff with more than 18,000 signatures. Most of the petitions were posted online Nov. 10, which means they have until Dec. 10 to qualify for a response.

It’s impossible to tell from the website who is behind the drive, given that those signing the petition only use their first names, last-name initials, and city and state of residence. The website does show that most petitions include the John Hancocks of signers from other states.

Steve Eichler, CEO of TeaParty.org, said his organization isn’t involved with the petition drive, but added that he wouldn’t be surprised if tea party advocates were at the root of it.

“We have not put out anything seceding from the United States, but the feedback we’re getting shows that people believe that their elected state leaders are more in tune with their needs than those of the federal government,” said Mr. Eichler.

He added that support for secession has cropped up in comments on the organization’s blogs. “People are feeling disenfranchised, they’re feeling a loss of voice, and they just don’t know what else to do,” he said.

Many of the petitions make their argument by quoting extensively from the Declaration of Independence, although some also add that the federal government has grown too large.

“The U.S. continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending,” says the Texas petition, which had more than 34,000 signatures as of Monday evening.

The Oregon petition argues that the federal government is guilty of an “abuse of power” by forcing “unconstitutional laws over [its] own citizens.”

This article actually wants to ridicule those that want Constitutional government. Those wishing to return to Constitutional government have lowered their expectations of the U.S. Govt that they are "begging" the criminals in D.C. for permission to leave.

Why should 300 million people beg the 1500 criminals running D.C. for permission to leave the land of their birth ? Wouldn't it be simpler to remove the 1500 usurpers ?

I have no doubt that there are serious people that are sick and tired of these so-called "leaders" inability to resist corruption and the resultant fallout.

The petitions being sent to D.C. are no different than the multitude of requests made by our forefathers to the bastard King of England. People are hurting all over our country and it's the result of allowing these so-called geniuses to run our lives instead of running them ourselves. The sons of communist bitches in D.C. are treating these petitions just like King George did, laughing, ignoring, and ridiculing them. Uncle Sambo thinks that freedom lovers will be stifled by FOX NEWS, Glenn Beck and his ilk, or by the machine gun carried by unamerican police state goons. Uncle Sambo is fucking kidding himself.

It occurred to me that the States seceded long ago. How could anyone deny the fact that the current government operates without any concern for the Constitution or the Bill of Rights ?

The State Governments capitulated to FEDERAL usurpation in a big way when they signed enabling legislation related to Social(ist) Security. States and their mismanagement teams have so broken their oaths and their treasuries that they resorted to FEDERAL intervention and FEDERAL funding to avoid the bankrupt conditions of their governments. The dependency upon FEDERAL RESERVE BANKING has resulted in a cabal of murdering blood-suckers running the country. It's that simple.

Since these blood-sucking murderers have been controlling the nation we've been in a continuous war with someone, two parents have been made to work in order to provide for their family, prayer has been removed from the schools (as well as education), everyone has been given a social number (slave registration), our children now belong to the State, a surveillance/police state agenda operates openly, tracking of every purchase by the FEDS, forced vaccinations are the order of the day, and every thing you do requires a license or permit from these STATE and FEDERAL MASTERS (no longer your servants).

I say, this is fucking ridiculous. I can't understand anyone complying with this nonsense, let alone the free and brave people of America. I couldn't care less that millions of Americans have accepted this abominable condition. They are either stupid, uninformed, lazy, too busy or what-the-fuck-ever. I AM FREE, I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY BENEFIT FROM UNCLE SAMBO and will give no quarter in return. LIBERTY is GOD'S gift to mankind and no army of bankers/politicians can lien it.

Lastly, I will never give up on my fellow Americans because they too were born of freedom. People all over the world are tired of being herded like cattle. They have already traveled the road we're on. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, surely refers to socialism/communism - and I for one am not willing to go there regardless of whether 100 million others are willing to do so. 100 million voters/socialists have no collective power to override my INALIENABLE RIGHTS, either by legislation or executive orders.

A constitutional convention with the present controllers in power and Schumer, Feinstein and many nameless, dutiful senators and reps writing the new document would end up with all power concentrated in Tel Aviv, London and New York.

The constitution of the former USSR paid lip service to rights, while Rockefeller's replacement (written years ago) would replace all rights with privileges that may be suspended on a whim by a powerful commissar.

There is no way to limit the mischief of a constitutional convention. Who here trusts the present bunch to restore freedoms lost? If we replaced them all then a CC probably wouldn't be necessary, and those who would like to participate in a re-write would begin by abolishing THE BIG TEN and making us all corporate employees with duties to perform in exchange for air, water, food and roofs over our heads.

You might need to cut and paste the url.

As of today the number count is 109,687.

That's far above what was needed ie 25,000 by 12/09/12 to warrant an official response from the WH, even if some sigs are found to be dups or illegitimate for various reasons.( I noticed several signatures were out of state residents -is that ok for a Texas secession petition ???)

Btw Hairdo Perry sort of kind of toned down his position against the petition and GOP official, Peter Morrison, is quite vocally pro secession ( maybe even a bit over the top):

On Monday, The Huffington Post reported that the governor's press secretary, Catherine Frazier, said that Perry "believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it." Morrison went on to express exasperation at the "maggots" who backed Obama, specifically accusing non-white voters of voting for the president on an "ethnic basis."...
