Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told Politico on Tuesday that the campaign worried most about having to run against former Utah governor Jon Huntsman.

“I think we were honest about our concerns about Huntsman,” he said. “I think Jon Huntsman would have been a very tough general election candidate, and as someone who helped manage his nomination for ambassador, he’s a good guy. We looked at his profile in a general election and though he would have been difficult.”

Huntsman had framed himself as a pragmatic Republican rather than a die-hard conservative. But during his presidential campaign, the moderate Republican was pilloried by conservatives for believing climate change and evolution were real, and for supporting civil unions for LGBT couples. He also called for an extra tax on large institutions to crack down on “too-big-to-fail” banks.

Huntsman, who served as the U.S. ambassador to China, ended his White House bid in 2011 after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary. Huntsman had focused his resources on the state, but came in third. He consistently trailed behind in polls.

Each (s)Election cycle Americans are treated to a less palatable set of candidates, none of which consider the people as anything more than cannon fodder once elected.

I'd vote for a guy named Jon Huntsman over a guy named Mitt any day.

There are actually govt agents who spread conspiracy theories among the gullible to help promote the illusion that the govt is all powerful.

IMO Huntsman was the only Republican who stood a chance of winning.

The Republicans themselves eliminated any possibility of a win by castigating those other Rs with appeal. I think Huntsman was probably the smartest amongst the Rs - but wouldn't speculate on his chances.

Huntsman is funded literally by the Rothschilds. He is romney's cousin & supports obamacare, carbon tax, big govt bailouts. if he was a threat to obama's reelection it was because he was so similar to him

I agree with you. Huntsman is a bigtime RINO for the reasons you state and more.

Even Howard Dean endorsed Huntsman as a Prez candidate - what does that tell us?

"Huntsman is the real deal.”. . .

Ultimately, Dean suggested Huntsman should be a Democrat.

“I learned that Jon Huntsman is a great candidate for president but he is in the wrong party,” Dean said.

Yeah, I guess he was the high-IQ intellectual RINO squat. He can speak Chinese and debate with the best of them, but he's still RINO squat.

Great Caesar's ghost. I'm so glad all of this is over. Only genuine nerds like poli-sci grad students or elections wonks want to autopsy the pubbie campaign. This sordid chapter can now be buried six feet deep. RIP.
