Gas Company Accepts Full Responsibility For Springfield Explosion

SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – Columbia Gas Company admits they are at fault for an explosion that leveled a Springfield strip club. [What lawyer would allow a client to make an admission like that? - Esso]

It looked like a missile strike on Friday night. [WTF? Why would they say that? - Esso]

Pipe punctured by gas worker in Springfield

The massive natural gas explosion injured more than 20 people and damaged 42 buildings on Worthington Street in Springfield.

The explosion was caused by a gas company employee sticking a metal probe into an underground pipe. But it was not his fault. WBZ has confirmed the painted marking on the sidewalk indicating the location of an underground gas line was incorrect. It was off by more than two feet.

Those markings were put there by Columbia Gas a year earlier, but for some reason did not reflect an elbow turn in the underground pipe.

The President of the Gas Company, Steve Bryant, said “Under normal circumstance there would be a straight line from the valve box to where he already knew the service line entered the building. But it did not follow a straight line. So following standard practice he put probe in the ground and struck the service line.”

The leaking gas quickly accumulated in the building that housed a strip club and 30 minutes later, some unknown ignition source caused the explosion. Luckily the worker had ordered an evacuation and no one was killed.

Even though Columbia Gas has accepted full responsibility, it could still face fines from the Department of Public Utilities.

Anne Berwick is the Chair of the Commission. She says, “We know the markings on the sidewalk were placed in the wrong place, so we are going to investigate how that came to pass.”

Columbia Gas drew those markings in November 2011.

But the company still has not said why. And the state wants to know what caused the initial odor of gas.

It was the search for the source of that smell that led to the punctured line and explosion.

I think we're going to be seeing a lot of "NatGas explosions" from now on.

Don't forget the second strike in Springfield , a strip club got leveled it took down renforced concrete , they say it was a gas but gas expands at 350 mps to destroy re/concrete you need 1000mps most drone bombs are at 10000mps so that should do it .

Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.

Thanks for the ping. I've long suspected that the records of underground utilities (BEFORE YOU DIG CALL MISS UTILITY!) were mapped from memory estimates long after the contractors' backhoes had closed the trenches.

They now install tracer tape that's read with above ground metal detector-type sensors and this system is very good. But, every time a Philadelphia worker is electrocuted after striking a buried 12,700V subway feeder with his backhoe, it confirms that digging along MISS UTILITY'S spray painted guidelines on old installations are an act of faith.

Also, the probe's penetration into that gas line (pictured above) looks suspicious. Is that black iron or galvanized pipe? (both were legal for direct burial at one time) If so it must have been very thin from corrosion or electrolysis in order to dimple in around the hole that way. Thermoplastic gas lines are in service but that penetration doesn't look like plastic pipe to me.

They're hiding more than just a leak probe oopsie. That may be evidence of crumbling infrastructure hidden in plain sight just like the front page pic of the nano thermite beam cut off at GROUND ZERO.

Wrong, Dawggie! God and several co-conspirators have confessed that they were responsible for this terrorist act. "Book 'em Danno!"

Pastor Scott Lively: Maybe God blew up Scores strip club; Springfield explosion was 'answer to our prayers'

SPRINGFIELD — In a blog post published on Saturday, city Pastor Scott Lively thanked God for the massive explosion that leveled a Worthington Street strip club and called for "further cleansing" in the city.

State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan on Sunday said investigators determined a Columbia Gas employee had punctured a gas line with a tool, causing gas to build up in the Scores Gentlemen's Club building at 453 Worthington St.

Writing the day after the blast, though, Lively contended the hand of God – not the hand of a gas worker – might have been responsible for the devastation.

"We are giving Him all the glory and praise for this occurrence, since it is only by His power that any of our prayers can have any effect," Lively wrote in a post titled 'SCORES and the Power of Imprecatory Prayer.' "We also thank God that no one was seriously injured in this blast, though it was enormous."

In his post about the explosion, Lively said he has been including "imprecatory prayers" in his church services and Bible studies at his Holy Grounds Coffee House on State Street.

"Imprecatory prayers are Old Testament prayers for the defeat and destruction of the enemies of God and his people," Lively explained. Psalm 109, "A Cry for Vengeance," is often cited as the Bible's most well-known imprecatory prayer.

A New Testament variation on this type of prayer, Lively wrote, involves asking for people to be spared as institutions are destroyed.

Responding to a request for comment from The Republican Wednesday, Lively echoed his hope for the destruction of "institutions" with no harm to human life.

"My prayer is and has been for God to save the people and destroy the institutions," Lively wrote in an email to a reporter. "I think this is a good example of that though it is only speculation that [the cause of the explosion] was God. The fact there were no serious injuries lends weight to that."

Though nobody was killed in the explosion, a number of people – including over a dozen firefighters and several police officers and utility workers – were hurt, and many more were left homeless.

Pamela Schwartz, of the Western Massachusetts Network to End homelessness wrote Tuesday that Friends of the Homeless is seeking temporary housing for 15 to 17 people who lost subsidized apartments in the blast.

Now the site is a mound of bricks, rubble and debris surrounded by heavy damaged buildings. Clean-up continues after the natural gas explosion on Worthington St. Springfield explosion probe continues on Day 3

The explosion also dealt a devastating blow to the Square One Children's Center at 155 Chestnut St. In the wake of the explosion, Square One officials scrambled to find new childcare placements for 98 children.

Speaking earlier this week, Joan B. Kagen, Square One's president and chief executive officer, said 84 children were expected to return to preschool Tuesday and that the remaining 14 were expected to be placed by Wednesday.

It was the second Square One facility destroyed in the past 18 months; the organization's South End site took a direct hit from the June 1, 2011 tornado.

Known for his book The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party and his anti-gay missionary work in Uganda, Lively – a Christian evangelist and founder of Abiding Truth Ministries – has been no stranger to controversy in the city.

Last year, Lively came under fire from city and school officials who alleged that some truant High School of Commerce students were spending school hours at the pastor's nearby Holy Grounds Coffee House. Then, information surfaced that the volunteer manager of Holy Grounds, Michael J. Frediani, was a convicted sex offender.

Lively said at the time that he had no knowledge of the Frediani's criminal history, which included a three-year prison stint in New York for sexual abuse in the first degree involving an 11-year-old girl.

Earlier this month, Lively announced that he is considering a run for governor.

As part of his "seven year campaign to re-Christianize the City of Springfield," Lively said, he has "... included an appeal to God to destroy the works of Satan in this city."

That appeal, Lively said, specifically targeted the city's establishments featuring nude exotic dancers.

Lively urged his followers to share his message via email, urging them to join him "... in the following prayer for the further cleansing of Springfield."

In that prayer, Lively asks for goodness and morality to prevail in the city's population, and for community leaders to follow Christian values.

And, he adds: "Finally Lord, we pray that you would destroy the works of Satan in this city and ask you demolish them in such a way that it is clearly by your hand alone and not the works of men, saving the people but destroying the institutions that have set themselves against your truth."

In his email to The Republican Wednesday, Lively reiterated his hope for the rest of Springfield's adult entertainment venues to meet a fate similar to the one that left Scores a smoldering crater.

"I pray He takes down the rest of them too," Lively wrote. "If another goes down in some strange or dramatic way I'll take that as proof that both were by His hand."

Lively could be the poster-boy for why many do not attend services.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken
