Study Shows Abortion Linked to High Breast Cancer Risk

by Steven Ertelt | Beijing, China | LifeNews.com | 11/26/12 2:11 PM

A study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention shows abortion increases the risk of breast cancer for women.

C. Yanhua of the First Peoples’ Hospital of Kunming in Yunnan province and his colleagues found the abortion-breast cancer association after comparing data from 263 cases of breast cancer and 457 controls without the disease. Their analysis covers the years 2009-2011.

The authors examined information on disease diagnosis, demographics, medical history, and reproductive characteristics of the patients involved and also looked at short menstrual cycle, old age at first live birth, never breastfeeding, history of oral contraceptive use, postmenopausal status and nulliparity to determine in abortion-breast cancer link exists.

They write that “multivariate model analysis revealed the significant independent positive associations with breast cancer of shorter menstrual cycle, older age at first live birth, never breastfeeding, history of oral contraception experience, increased number of abortion, menopause status, and nulliparities.”

“Number of abortion showed an increasing higher risk of breast cancer,” they added, while saying that women who had one live birth lowered their risk. “As far as women who had once a live birth, it showed decreased the risk of breast cancer compared to nulliparous.”

“This study showed an increased risk of breast cancer with times of abortion. The association between abortion and risk of breast cancer in a study in China showed that the risk factors of female breast cancer included abortion times more than two (Li et al., 2006),” they continued. “Another study found that risk was raised among women reporting at least one abortion, but no trend was seen with number of abortions (Heuch et al., 2008). In a meta-analysis study, pooled odds ratio for number of abortions greater than and equal three was statistically significant (95%CI:1.68-5.36) (Tao et al.,2011).”

“In conclusion, in this study the estrogen related risk factors of breast cancer included woman who had longer menstrual cycle, older age of first live birth, never breastfeeding, nulliparity, and number of abortions more than one. Therefore, it is recommended to women with these risk factors perform breast cancer screening tests earlier and regularly,” they said.

A study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention in February reported a very statistically significant increased risk of breast cancer for women with previous abortions as opposed to women who have never had one.

This breast cancer risk has been studied before. It's not a question of abortion but of lactation that is prompted by pregnancy and then not able to run its course. Similar difficulties have occurred with miscarriages, stillbirths, and immediate adoption. The particular risk with abortion is that, in most other circumstances, such as miscarriage, the woman is under medical care and gets some hormonal treatment to end the lactation. But with so many problems in getting an abortion, the woman frequently has to travel a considerable distance for the abortion procedure and does not see a doctor for follow-up care that would take care of the lactation. Therefore the problem is not so much the abortion as the various political roadblocks that make abortion difficult to obtain.

Bullshit. I've known many women who have had miscarriages and none have ever been given any medication or hormonal treatment relating to lactation. I've known several women who had stillborn babies and even they were given no medication or hormonal treatment despite breasts swelling with milk for a baby that will never use it. The recommendation was to pump the milk and share it with a mother who needs it!

Lactation is an extremely painful process that doesn't really get going until AFTER THE BABY IS BORN when the breasts become as hard as concrete filling with milk for the baby. Sure, there is small secretion in the breasts through pregnancy, but it isn't anything like producing milk after the baby is born. Most abortions are in the first 12 weeks and there is NO LACTATION at that time.

Lactation isn't a frickin' issue until after the baby is born! Obviously, you have never had the joy of lactating, but that doesn't mean you can just make up stories to validate your pro abortion stance.

Shoonra is misusing some of the known science on breasts. Breast are not fully developed until the first pregnancy. At that time the tissue undergoes changes in preparation for lactation. Once a birth takes place the cells complete their transformation and start producing milk. This is why it takes a couple of days for a woman's milk to come in. When a woman has an abortion, the tissue does not fully transform and it is surmised that these "half" transformed cells are the ones that become cancerous. Where he gets it wrong, other than the lactation part, is that for some reason this does not apply to natural miscarriages. The body seems to have safety nets for this.

Breast are not fully developed until the first pregnancy.

www.breastcancerfund.org/.../pregnancy-and-lactation/

Human breasts do not fully mature until a woman's first full-term pregnancy. As the breasts prepare for lactation, the breast structures complete their growth and breast tissue becomes less sensitive to hormones and other chemicals.[1]

For all racial groups, the younger a woman is when she has her first child, and the more children she has, the less risk she has for developing breast cancer after menopause.[2] However, for black women, while younger age at first birth and larger family size protects against breast cancer after age 45, it confers additional risk for breast cancer before age 45.[3],[4] Overall, black women under 45 have higher rates of breast cancer than other racial groups,[5] and the research relating pregnancy to pre- menopausal breast cancer has not explored social, environmental or economic factors that may influence this racial difference in pre-menopausal breast cancer risk. It is difficult, therefore, to tease apart which aspects of pregnancy—whether it is pregnancy-related risks for breast cancer, higher exposure to environmental chemicals during pregnancy or other social factors—determine this risk.

Because pregnancy means a significant stage in breast maturation, this time period is one in which breast cells divide rapidly and key changes occur in the breast to prepare for breastfeeding.[6] As a result, pregnancy itself is a vulnerable period for the development of breast cancer. The overall rates of pregnancy-associated breast cancer are small, but pregnancy does confer a small increase in risk that can last for several years after delivery, after which longer term protective effects emerge.[7] While pregnancy-related breast cancers are relatively rare, tumors that develop at this time can be more aggressive than later-life breast cancers.[8] Exposure to toxic chemicals during pregnancy may contribute to increased risks of pregnancy-related breast cancer.[9]

Overall, black women under 45 have higher rates of breast cancer than other racial groups,

I wonder if that also has to do with fat in the diet which I have heard can contribute to breast cancer.
