Checque. He was 28 years old and lived in Virginia Beach, Va. A highly decorated combat veteran, Petty Officer Checque, who was originally from Monroeville, Pa., was assigned to the Naval Special Warfare unit, Department of Defense officials said. He was a 2002 graduate of Norwin High School in North Huntingdon, Pa., the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the school’s wrestling team, reports triblive.com. As our colleagues, Sharifullah Sahak and Azam Ahmed, report, Petty Officer Checque was among six people who were killed on Sunday during the rescue of Dr. Dilip Joseph. Dr. Joseph had been abducted by the Taliban last week, with two Afghan men, while driving to a rural medical clinic. They were taken to a mountainous area about 50 miles from the border of Pakistan. Two members of the Taliban were arrested during the rescue by coalition forces. According to Naval officials, Petty Officer Checque enlisted in October 2002 just a few months after his high school graduation. He served in Iraq. He was assigned to the East Coast-based special warfare unit since 2008. He received multiple commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal. In a statement, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said: “I want to commend the U.S. Special Operations team who rescued an American citizen captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan. I was deeply saddened to learn that a U.S. service member was killed in the operation, and I also want to extend my condolences to his family, teammates and friends. The special operators who conducted this raid knew they were putting their lives on the line to free a fellow American from the enemy’s grip. They put the safety of another American ahead of their own, as so many of our brave warriors do every day and every night. In this fallen hero, and all of our special operators, Americans see the highest ideals of citizenship, sacrifice and service upheld.
