Is America exceptional? Once upon a time, hardly anyone dissented from the idea that the USA was different from all other nations. The “exceptional” sobriquet made the rounds when it became obvious that hereditary status and class distinctions did not count in America, leaving individuals free to be judged on their merits alone.

I write this partly in shock, as I had driven by the bucolic village of Newtown, Connecticut only 12 hours before the massacre of 20 schoolchildren, six staff members, and the mass murderer’s own mother.

America’s Exceptional Gun Violence

It's only exceptional if you count all of the criminals who posess firearms. Without the 2nd Amendment, we would not be safe as a society in a nation littered with criminals. As the saying goes, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." People have a right to keep and bear arms". ;)

Without the Second Amendment a good many of the guns would not be in the hands of criminals. Those guns may have started their existence being bought by honest and responsible people, but unfortunately guns aren't buried with the owners, and aren't always out of reach of less honest or less stable relatives or friends.

The Constitution may guarantee the right to keep & bear arms - but it does not guarantee that this will be done in total secrecy. The govt could at least keep a complete list of who has what guns, so that if a crime is committed with an identifiable gun some effort can be made to narrow down who might have had the gun that was used. Additionally, someone found with a gun not properly registered would have a great deal of explaining to do, which might solve some crimes.

The NRA, having promised "a meaning contribution", instead repeats its absurd suggestion made after the Virginia Tech shootings of 5 years ago: More guns inside schools. This time it wants the federal govt to legislate to put those additional guns in all the public schools. If, instead, someone had suggested that the federal govt legislate to put a copy of Darwin's books in every public school, you'd see rightwingers burst a blood vessel.

I have a different proposal: Federal legislation that makes the NRA itself financially responsible for EVERY gun death. If that doesn't bring down the stats, then further legislation making whoever is the CEO of the NRA criminally responsible for every gun death, so the NRA top dog goes to prison with (or instead of) the shooter.

Well, let's take things a bit further and make it equal.

Because the media, be it tv, movies, video games, is owned almost exclusively by Jews, let's force Jews to pay reparations every time we are lied to on the news, and every time some crazy does something that was inspired by the media.

Fair?

Gun control in Chicago did not work. The State Supreme Court overturned the law. Now, you can at least own a handgun there. Before, if you had them and they were registered, you could keep them, but you could not register any new ones. Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is a losing venture. The best defense is an armed populace to keep the crooks guessing as to which houses have guns, and which do not. If they know you are home, they will not do anything against you or your property.

BTW, Iranians are NOT Arabs, they are Assyrians. I knew a Christian Iranian who found a sponsor and brought his family to the U.S. after the Ayatollahs took over.

They tried gun registration in Chicago, but the State Supreme Court shot the law down as unconstitutional. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. ;)

Communism was originally called Jewish Bolshevism. Since Jews are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions, all are responsible for monetary damages. Fair?

About as fair as holding the NRA responsible for criminals using firearms.

You crack me up, Shoonra.

Here's my proposal. What about for every American death from guns due to a bad guy who is an illegal or a repeat offender who wasn't put away in jail due to a technicality due to the weasel trial lawyer using something won in the courts previously by the ACLU or for every suicide or murder committed by lunatic kooks who now live in our midst due to civil rights legislation promoted by the ACLU and Nat'l Trial Lawyers etc and for every kook whose murderous ways were enhanced by BigPharma or by violent Hollywood produced films or by greedy software companies in Southern CA - what about all the afore mentioned be forced to go bankrupt paying victims' families with every cent they have for their damaging self-serving agendas that contributed to many, many, many deaths the past 100 years and after these creepy greedy people are left bankrupt , they should be tried for mass murder and either jailed for life or be sent bye bye due to capital punishment.

I think if your idea and my idea were put to a national vote, my idea would win handily. sorry But everyone in America with a brain knows who are the true bad guys.

This was tried in Chicago, but failed miserably. The State Supreme Court threw out the law. ;)

Perhaps BIG PHARMA should be responsible for the 100,000 deaths from prescription drugs each year?

And auto manufacturers held responsible for every death related to alcohol or advanced geriatric syndrome? (Seniors who refuse to stop driving even though they are clearly menacing others)

In the course of your studies of the constitution you overlooked the fact that prior restraint is repugnant to its principles.

And, allowing those who are hostile to the constitution to propose drastic changes like yours would be like allowing the Palestinians to draft all proposals for aid to Israel. How would you feel about that?

Also, what's the solution for firearms with easily interchangeable barrels? And what firearm barrel can't be replaced if it means avoiding prison?

Lemme guess.

"The constitution guarantees the right to keep and bear arms, but it doesn't guarantee the right to more than one barrel for each gun!"__Shoonra

ALSO, and here's the kicker: Most firearms' ballistics can be altered by simply firing more ammo, and by tapping the muzzle crown with a sharp instrument. So, it would only be the dumbest crims who handed over a crime gun that was identifiable. For years dealers were forced to record all ammo purchases, and it was finally abandoned when it was discovered that not one crime was ever solved as a result.

The answer to the crime in America lies elsewhere, and even more onerous govt regs will likely aggravate the problems of an already stressed, drugged, bioscanned, X-rayed and Holocaust-guilted nation.

It sure does. It lies in the 2nd Amendment right of the law abiding citizen to "keep and bear arms". An armed citizen is the best defense against criminal attack.

Recall, that when the new Constitution was offered to be ratified, several of the States refused unless there were a Bill of Rights attached. This was the basis of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to that Constitution. ;)

That's right, and even after the efforts of "Publius" to sell the constitution to a suspicious public, it just wouldn't fly until the bill of rights were added.
